Srichaphan Leads Seeds Safely Through
Kafelnikov, Schalken also advance.
Second-seed Paradorn Srichaphan made his debut at the BMW Open in Munich by
scoring a 6-4, 6-1 win over German wild card Michael Kohlmann on Monday. The
Thai plays in his third clay court event of the season and has now improved
his record on this surface to 2-2 for the year.
No. 3 seed Sjeng Schalken advanced to the second round by ousting Germany's
Lars Burgsmuller 6-3, 6-1. The Dutchman made his debut in Munich in 1995,
when he advanced to the quarterfinals, and two years ago he suffered a second
round loss.
Fifth-seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov scored his first ever win in Munich by defeating
Belgian Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-2. In the second round the Russian, who plays
here for the fourth time, will face German Alexander Waske, who ousted Adrian
Voinea 7-5, 7-6(2).
Jarkko Nieminen, seeded No. 8 this week defeated Irakli Labadze 6-3, 6-3. The
Finn competes in the BMW Open draw for the first time, and he reached the
third round in the clay court events in Monte Carlo (l. to Juan Ignacio Chela)
and Barcelona (l. to Marat Safin).
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Srichaphan: “I trained last week for two hours a day. I just try to put more
balls in the court without too much spin. I hit the ball more flat like I do
on the hard courts.”
“I watch a lot of matches on TV. I watch matches every day before I go to
bed. If you watch a lot you can feel the match and how you’re supposed to
move.”
Schalken: “It’s my first win on clay this year. I had the feeling I was
playing well. I have to get used to the conditions here.”
Kafelnikov: “It feels good, I finally broke my spell. I’m happy to have won
today. I have another match on Wednesday, and I’m not looking further than
that.”
Arthurs: “It’s nice to win on clay, it’s my first win on the dirt. I’m
pretty happy with the way I played. The courts suit my game, I hope it stays
sunny.”
Waske: “Two weeks ago in Monte Carlo he beat me 6-4, 6-4. I was hoping that
I could raise my game here. I got some extra energy through the crowd.”
“I won the important points today, I think that made the difference. I tend
to get underestimated by my opponents on clay, it’s not my best surface.”
Burgsmuller: “I played ok until 3-3 in the first set, after that I didn’t
find my rhythm. I didn’t get any chances to break him [Arthurs]. You have to
play better than I did today to beat him.”
TUESDAY MATCHES
In the first center court match on Tuesday, wild card and No. 7 seed Tim
Henman meets Nicolas Lapentti in his first match since the Nasdaq-100 Open in
Miami in March. The Brit, who has a 1-1 record in Munich following an
appearance in 1998, underwent right shoulder surgery in November last year.
The Brit has won only one match in 2003, against Jan-Michael Gambill at the
Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells last month.
Lapentti plays in the Munich draw for the third time, and he advanced to the
quarterfinals one year ago (l. to Radek Stepanek). The Ecuadorian's best result
this season was a fourth round in at the Tennis Masters Series event in Miami
last month.
Last year's runner-up, Rainer Schuettler, meets Austrian Jurgen Melzer. The
German, who is seeded No. 4 this week, reached the final of the Australian
Open in January and the semifinals at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells
last month. He competes in Munich for the sixth consecutive year and has a
6-5 record here.
Melzer, who turns 22 next month, reached his career-second semifinal in
Houston last week. The Austrian scored wins over Taylor Dent, Kenneth Carlsen
and Mardy Fish before losing to eventual champion Andre Agassi.
Top-seed Roger Federer, a first-timer in Munich, already has two titles under
his belt in 2003, Marseille and Dubai. This is his first event on clay this
season. Croatian Zeljko Krajan encountered an opening round loss against
Fernando Meligeni here in Munich twelve months ago. He has won two matches on
the ATP circuit in 2003, in Chennai and Casablanca.
