Safin Looking Like a Master Again
Marat Safin moved through to the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters Series event
for the first time since October 2002 with a straight set victory over hard-
serving lefthander Wayne Arthurs Thursday at the Masters Series Monte-Carlo.
The last time Safin reached the final eight at an ATP Masters Series was at
the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, where Safin went on to win his 11th and most
recent career title. Since then, Safin missed most of the 2003 season with a
wrist injury before coming back this year with two appearances in finals at the
2004 Australian Open and Estoril Open last week. Safin was a quarterfinalist
at the 2002 Masters Series Monte-Carlo, losing to Carlos Moya in a third-set
tiebreak.
Safin next plays Spain’s Alberto Martin, who was up a break in the third set
before Argentina’s Agustin Calleri battled back to send it into a tiebreak.
At 1-all in the tiebreak, Martin won six straight points and won in nearly 2
hours. Martin upset France’s Sebastien Grosjean yesterday.
In other matches at the Monte-Carlo Country Club on Thursday, Guillermo Coria
of Argentina took on Romania’s Andrei Pavel. Coria was a finalist at this
event last year while Pavel was a semifinalist in Houston last week at the U.S.
Clay Court Championships. Neither had dropped a set through the first two
rounds this week and it was Pavel who drew first blood by winning the first set
, 6-4. But Coria came back to win the next two sets and move to 12-3 lifetime
in Monte Carlo.
Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko had also yet to drop a set when he faced Croatian
Ivan Ljubicic in the opening match on Court des Princes. And he kept that
streak intact with a routine 6-2, 6-2, victory. Prior to this event, Davydenko
had never been passed the 2nd round in an ATP Masters Series tournament and was
just 5-12 career, before his three wins this week.
