Doubles Defeat for Tired Williamses Tuesday, July 1, 2003 Were Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardenne watching by any chance? It seems there is a way to beat the Willams sisters at Wimbledon, but you need two players to do it. Russia's Elena Dementieva and Lina Krasnoroutskaya, the 15th seeds, provided No.1 Court with a memorable upset when they defeated Serena and Venus Williams, the third seeds, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. How did they do it? The obvious answer is that the Williams sisters were still tired from their three-set quarter-finals earlier in the day, and mentally not as sharp when they returned for this match in the early evening. Serena Williams said later: "We both had three-set matches. It's hard to turn around and try to play a doubles match. We were both fatigued mentally and physically, and needed a break." But that is only part of the story. Dementieva and Krasnoroutskaya approached the match as if they had a chance to win it, a motto many players in women's tennis do not have when they play either Serena or Venus in singles. The 15th seeds served hard (well, at least Krasnoroutskaya did - Dementieva has a sub-standard serve), drilled their groundstrokes, looked for any weaknesses and took most of their opportunities. They also tried to be aggressive at all times, seeking the net whenever they could. It was a lesson in the power of positive play in the face of tough opposition. The Russians sensed an upset might be on as soon as the Williams sisters took the court. The Americans were not as fast as normal, Venus was loose on many of her returns and Serena overhit several volleys. Thanks to Krasnoroutskaya's strong, well-placed serves, the Russian duo led 6-3, 2-0 before the Williams sisters turned the match around with the sheer power of their shotmaking. By the third set, it seemed as if their experience might tell. But the Russians rose again, helped by the advantage of serving first in the final set. At 6-5, they went for their returns against Venus' serve, and she was broken to love. Dementieva and Krasnoroutskaya now play Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela and Angelique Widjaja of Indonesia in the quarter-finals.
