Russians Sweep Slovenia Aside http://www.fedcup.com/popup/mediagallery.asp?id=10233&current=726 Elena Bovina, a late replacement in singles for Anastasia Myskina, became the Russian hero in Portoroz when she delivered the third and deciding point for her country by beating Slovenia’s top player Katarina Srebotnik 76(4) 62. Shortly before the start of the Sunday’s opening singles match Russian captain Shamil Tarpischev made the surprising team change. The first meeting between these two players was also the first real battle in this tie after the two one-sided encounters on the first day. There was one break of serve on each side in the early phase of the first set. After that, both players held their service games with Srebotnik missing a huge opportunity in the eleventh game when Bovina saved three break points. The opening set was decided in the tie break which went to Russian 7-4. The 20-year old from Moscow maintained her rhythm in the second set, winning it 62 and ensuring Russia’s place in the semifinals. “I am very pleased with this win. We wanted to finish the match as soon as possible. But we don’t forget that Anastasia Myskina and Elena Dementieva had two tough matches on Saturday and this success is our team effort,” said Bovina, embracing Russia’s ‘good luck charms’ - Filip and Aliya, the son and the niece of Russian captain Tarpischev. “The first set could have gone either way. I didn’t take my chances and in the second set Elena remained very strong. She deserved to win and I have to congratulate her and wish the Russian team good luck in the semifinals,” said Srebotnik. Slovenian captain Mima Jausovec, who is celebrating her 47th birthday today, gave all the credit to Russina team: “We were surprised by the Russian change. When we saw Bovina in the team we thought that it could be our chance to win our first point, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. The first set was decisive. Katarina had some chances, which she didn’t take. But in general we have to congratulate Russian team. They were better opponent and they deserved to win.” In the first dead rubber Russian captain Tarpischev handed Vera Zvonareva her Fed Cup debut, replacing Elena Dementieva. Zvonareva did not disappoint, winning easily 61 62 in 1 hour 11 minutes against Maja Matevzic, to extend Russia's lead to 4-0. That became 5-0 when a doubles pairing of Elena Dementieva and Anastasia Myskina, who were originally due to play singles today, defeated Tina Krizan and Katarina Srebotnik 62 63 in 1 hour and 6 minutes. The Russian team won all five matches without losing a single set. Russia, the four-times Fed Cup finalist, is among the four best teams this year. That is quite a difference from last year when Russia lost in the opening round against Germany and than saved their World Group status in the play-off against China. Russia will now face France in the Fed Cup Semifinals, and the nations have met five times before in Fed Cup, with the Russians holding a 3-2 lead. The Semifinals and Final are due to be played at one venue over one week, in the week commencing 17 November. The four semifinal teams, Russia, France, Belgium and USA or Italy, will have the opportunity to bid to stage the event. “Last year’s defeat was a good lesson for us and we definitely don’t want it to happen again. It would be great if the final tournament could be held in Moscow. That would be huge for Russian tennis and our fans. I am sure that our captain will do everything to make it happen,” Bovina said. “I wouldn’t like to predict anything how it is going to be against France. It depends on where we are going to play. I was already in contact with Mr. Youriy Lushkow, the mayor of Moscow, who promised me all the support for our bid for the tournament of the four best teams,” said Shamil Tarpishev. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.225.192.71
