Tim Henman became the 14th seed to reach the last 16 when he rallied from a
set down to defeat American Paul Goldstein 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, the match finishing
after 12.30 am. Henman, the 10th seed, next meets Russian Nikolay Davydenko in
the third round. 硬仗一場-___-|||
No. 5 seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov defeated long-time rival Thomas Enqvist
6-3, 2-6,6-3 to improve his career record to 8-5 against the Swede. Kafelnikov
went up an early break at 2-1 in the final set and added another break to go
ahead 5-2 before the two players exchanged breaks the final two games.
Kafelnikov next plays No. 11 seed Mardy Fish in the third round.
In the only match of the day involving two unseeded players, wild card Mike
Bryan defeated lucky loser Noam Okun 6-1, 6-7(9), 7-6(4) in an entertaining
battle on Court 2. Bryan, who is making his first singles appearance in more
than one year, saved one match point in the third set with Okun serving at 5-4,
ad in. Bryan also had two match points in the second set tie-break before the
Israeli came back. Bryan takes on No. 7 seed Max Mirnyi in the third round.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Kafelnikov: "It was an important game to go up 3-1 [in the third set] after he
had three break points on my serve. The outcome of the match might have been
different.
"It's a lot tougher for me right now and I'm getting older and I'm not at my
best and the players are getting better. But I'm having fun right now and not
putting pressure on myself. There's not one goal left for me in my career. I'm
just trying to enjoy myself the best I can. My best days are behind me. I did
it all and I have nothing to prove."
