[新聞] Refs 'Disappointed' With Totti Treatment

The head of Italy’s Referees Association has insisted that Francesco Totti
was dealt far too lenient a punishment following his improper conduct last
weekend
The Roma captain was shown a yellow card and fined ?8,000 for swearing
repeatedly at referee Nicola Rizzoli after the official accidentally blocked
the forward’s path to goal during Roma’s 3-1 victory over Udinese.
The softness of Totti’s punishment has been a source of controversy, but the
Disciplinary Commission are powerless to revise the penalty due to the
lenient account of the incident given by the official.
And AIA president Cesar Gussoni admitted he is bitterly disappointed in the
way Totti’s case has been handled.
Mistake
“There was an exception to the rule with Totti and we have to see what
consequences it could provoke,” he said.
“In any case, it represented a black mark that, as an ex-referee,
ex-designator and as a man left me deeply disappointed and bitter.
“Rizzoli made a mistake in not sending Totti off.”
Ref Ban
While some have praised Rizzoli’s light-handed approach to Totti’s
behaviour, many have slammed the referee’s actions, claiming that if it was
a less famous player than the Giallorossi favourite then a sending off and
five-match ban would have occurred.
And the Referees Association have clearly indicated their stance on the
matter by suspending Rizzoli from next week’s fixtures.
“The rules state that for a serious refereeing error he must answer to the
designator Pierluigi Collina,” said Gussoni. “Of course, for a situation
like this there could well be a ban.”
Favouritism?
Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini added fuel to the favouritism fire when he
claimed that a player such as Antonio Cassano – who has a reputation for his
short temper – would have received an automatic dismissal and lengthy
suspension if he had behaved the way Totti did.
But Gussoni dismissed Mancini’s claims, and said: “I can absolutely rule
that out because whoever, in voluntary terms and therefore in bad faith,
would leave the AIA very quickly. This is not the case with Rizzoli.”
