Do you think that romans are unpleasant to the rest of Italians? “No, only that there are stereotypes, that Romans are lazy, don’t want to work ... I don’t think this is the case. Everyone wants to come to the city to live and work.” Is the best Roma can finish is 4th place? “If we think about where we were a month ago, to finish 4th would be like a scudetto for us. But now we are trying to finish between 2nd and 4th. We will definitely be in the top 4 at the end of the season. Fiorentina, Napoli and Lazio are the biggest challengers for 4th place.” Your return has helped, but what else has happened for Roma to return to the team of last season? “Our players have recovered, we’ve changed formations, and we’ve won matches. A team can have problems, even when you are winning matches. When you retire, do you want to be remembered as a great striker or a pure #10? “When it’s over I’ll be able to say I was a great forward. Before in my career I played as an assist-man, now I score more goals”. Your most beautiful goal? “There are manyy. The chip over Julio Cesar in the 3-2 at San Siro, but also the volley in Sampdoria two years ago … and then against Udinese the year we won the scudetto. I’ll never forget the other chip over Peruzzi when we won the derby 5-1”. And the most emotional goal? “The chip over Peruzzi … even if it was not as important as the goal v Parma when we won the scudetto on last day of the season … “ Will you continue the pacifier when you celebrate goals? “Yes because it’s a dedication to my family: Ilary, Cristian, and Chanel. And remember that these days you can’t do much to celebrate scoring. And, frankly I don’t understand why this is. Before when you scored, you could take off you shirt to celebrate … now you get a yellow card. These are the rules, but I don’t agree with them”. If you could go back in time, would you have been a striker earlier in your career? “Yes, because I’d have 300 goals by now”. You can still reach that goal. “True, and it’s one of my objectives." Speaking of, your contract expires in 2010. You haven’t reknewed yet. “No, but I hope there won’t be any problems. I want to play until 2014 but I could stop before then. I’m mature. If the day comes where I’m not making a contribution to the club, I’d simply rip up the contract myelf.” In regard to contracts, Aquilani. “I don’t want to get involved with these negotiations because it’s between him and the club. I can say, though, as a captain of the team and as his friend -- I hope he stays. He’s a fundamental player for us, he’s a champion, a player of international level and quality ... he wants to succeed and do great things here at Roma.” You’ve chosen to marry Roma for life, but what about the curiousity to play abroad? “Curiosity, yes, that will always be there. But I decided from the heart. I don’t have any regrets”. There was a time you were going to leave? “Yes this is true, Madrid and Milan, but I would have chosen Real Madrid out of respect for the tifosi”. Over the next few years, when you stop playing, will you stay in football? “Certainly. Without football I don’t know what to do or what I’d be. I think of these things when I’m injured”. Will you be a manager? “Absolutely not. I could be a DS (Director of Sports), or the youth director”.
