Samantha Stosur credits coach David Taylor for giving her ammunition to take on big guns AAP December 22, 2010 11:10AM SAMANTHA Stosur has credited her coach for arming her with the belief and know-how to challenge for grand slam spoils. Her sights firmly set on next month's Australian Open, Stosur has revealed the very moment David Taylor - the respected former mentor of Martina Hingis and Ana Ivanovic - dramatically turned her career around. It was the summer day almost three years ago when Taylor told his charge she possessed a forehand like Steffi Graf and it was high time she cashed in. Stosur hasn't looked back since. Two grand slam semi-finals and one French Open runner-up showing later, the powerhouse Queenslander will head to Melbourne Park with realistic hopes of ending Australia's 32-year home major title drought. "Since being with David, I've gotten better and better and better," Stosur, now the world No 6 said. "Since being with him, I've realised how much I can do on the court and what my real strengths are and how I can use those every single time, no matter who the opponent is. "So everything is very clear. "He obviously has tremendous belief in me and he works so hard to get the result for me as well, whether it's on the court or preparing for a match or talking about tactics or whatever it is. "The bottom line is, he wants it for you and works hard and fully believes in my ability." Taylor, who doubles as Australia's Fed Cup captain, has been a major believer in Stosur since their very first session together in early 2008. Stosur, 23 at the time and a former world No 1 doubles player, was recovering from the debilitating Lyme's disease and struggling to crack the elite level in singles. In Taylor's eyes, Stosur's game plan was askew. "Sam always thought she had to hit backhand cross-courts with the best girls in the world," Taylor recalled. "But the first thing I saw was: `Well, you've just got to hit backhands through the middle and lines to get more forehands. Why are you trying to go string for strings? Get it back on your terms'. "No one had ever told her that and I can't believe that. "It's pretty simple - the more forehands she gets, the more chances she has to win. "It's not rocket science. Steffi Graf made a career out of it. "And from then on, Sam said that (approach) just took all the pressure off to know she had this great shot she never (used before). She used to practise it for hours. "I just told her: `If you're going to win 70 per cent of your points with your forehand and serve, well that's what you should be practising. "Not practising the two per cent shot, and I think that's a big philosophy I've got." It was the same philosophy that Taylor employed to transform Ivanovic and fellow Australian Alicia Molik into world-class players. "Lucky for Sam, the last two players I have coached have been forehand players also - with big kickers, big serves," Taylor said. "I coached Alicia for six years, then Ivanovic for a year and both are forehand players, which is unusual in women's tennis. "So all the patterns that I've practised and set up and tactics that I've got and all the books (I have) are very geared towards someone who is trying to dominate with a forehand. "I was lucky for the fact that they were very similar, had similar sort of styles and I was very clear on how they could win. "I think that's the why it worked pretty quickly with Sam." Molik, during her peak, often spoke of how Taylor gave her "clarity" on court. Stosur, who Taylor labels "the perfect student", is now reaping the benefit from that same clarity and says player and coach are mutually content. "I've learned a lot from him and I'm sure he's learned a lot from me," Stosur said. "It's one of those things, he's not the guy who says he knows it all and shuts off from everyone else. "We always have discussions and I guess you can learn from each other and feed off each other's knowledge. "It's been a great relationship."
