Hewitt and Agassi Battle for Title
No. 11 seed Andre Agassi will look to become the third player in the
Open Era and the 11 th player in the 106-year history of the tournament
to win the Cincinnati title at least three times. The 1995-1996 winner
will play in his first ATP final of the year when he battles
No. 10 seed Lleyton Hewitt on Sunday. Mats Wilander won the title
four times (1983-84, ‘86, ‘88) and Pete Sampras three times
(1992, ‘97, ‘99) in the Open Era.

Hewitt, a finalist here in 2002 (l. to Moya), is going for his third
career ATP Masters Series title in six tries. Agassi and Hewitt have
the most career titles among active players on the ATP circuit with
58 and 21, respectively. The winner will be the second-lowest seed to
win the title here behind No. 16 Carlos Moya who won two years ago.
Agassi, who moved into fifth place for all-time wins in the Open Era
with his 807 th in the semifinals against Andy Roddick, is the
third-oldest finalist in Cincinnati history at 34 years, 3 months
and 10 days.

He is playing for his 59 th career title in his 86 th final,
and is 2-0 in championship matches here.
Hewitt, who is 4-3 lifetime against Agassi, is looking for his third
ATP title of the year, having already picked up titles in Sydney
(d. Moya) and Rotterdam (d Ferrero). In five matches thus far,
he has lost his serve once (46 of 47 games) and he has yet to lose
a set. In the Open Era, 10 players have won the title here without
losing a set, the last was Moya two years ago, capped by his win over
Hewitt in the final. Hewitt is 21-7 all-time in career finals.
