G Garcia-Lopez (ESP) d (1)(WC)A Agassi (USA) 6-4 6-2 Spadea, Garcia-Lopez Reach Semifinals Guillermo Garcia-Lopez reached his fourth career semifinal with an upset of Andre Agassi 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships. Agassi's loss meant that for the 14th consecutive year the tournament's No. 1 seed will not win the singles title. The unseeded Garcia-Lopez went up a break in the first set and had Agassi at 5-3 serving for the set. Agassi was able to fend off three set points to break the Spaniard and get back on serve. Garcia-Lopez broke back for the set, converting his seventh set point on an Agassi backhand that went wide of the line. At 2-2 in the second set, Garcia-Lopez took the next four games to defeat the eight-time Grand Slam champion. The 21-year-old Spaniard fired 14 acesnine in the first set. "He was outhitting me," said Agassi. "I wasn't reacting well to the ball. He hits a heavy ball and a big forehand return. "The loss left the 35-year-old Agassi at 2-1 on the season. "I haven't gotten my game together," he said. " It will take matches and time to work that out. I can't realistically come here and expect to feel that comfortable on the court. It was a great experience to play here. I hope it makes sense to come back." Vince Spadea reached his second straight Delray Beach semifinal and a red-hot Tommy Haas also reached the semis with his ninth win in 11 matches in 2006. Spadea and Haas both dispatched unseeded players Friday; Spadea was a 6-3,6-3 winner over Hyung-Taik Lee while Haas beat Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-2, setting up a semifinal matchup between the two former Top 20 players on Saturday. Lee, who won only one point on Spadea's serve in the first set, had beaten Spadea in two previous matches. "My return was good today," said Spadea. "I've lost to him twice but this was a good sign to me that my game is improving.. I'm hitting the ball close to or as good as ever. This was the best I've served this week." The local Boca Raton product won for the 10th time in his last 12 matches in Delray Beach. "I try to rise to this occasion here in Delray," said the 32-year-old. " It would be a dream if I could win this." Haas converted all but four of his first serves into points, and quickly grabbed two breaks in the first set against Muller. "I played solid tennis and served well," said Haas, whose two losses this year have come to Roger Federer. "With the second break to go up 4-1 I felt a lot more comfortable." Haas and Spadea will play Saturday not before 3:00 pm while Garcia-Lopez plays the Xavier Malisse-Florian Mayer winner not before 7:00 pm.
