Notes: Pujols starting to warm up
Slugger raised his average by 20 points Friday vs. Tigers

DETROIT -- Along with several of his teammates, Albert Pujols is starting to
put it together at the plate. Pujols racked up four base hits, including his
first home run in almost three weeks, on Friday night in the Cardinals' loss
to the Tigers.
That gave him seven knocks in three games, and even in his 0-for-5 outing
Monday, he hit a couple of laser beams that went for outs.
The Cards still rank at the bottom of the National League in runs scored, but
the indicators have clearly been much more positive over the past several
days. They've scored four or more in four straight games, and 41 runs over
their past nine. That's not earth-shattering, but it counts as dramatic
improvement.
"We had a lot of good approaches, a lot of good quick bats, a lot of good
at-bats," manager Tony La Russa said on Friday night. "It's been that way the
whole L.A. series, and now this one, that's four games in a row. And a little
bit in San Diego. A lot of guys are looking better at the plate."
That surely includes Pujols, who raised his average by 20 points on Friday.
"Sometimes it takes a while to get started," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland.
"Of course we woke him up, but Albert's only hitting .245 -- but when it's
all said and done, I'll guarantee he'll be closer to .345 than .245."
