Messi to play after scare
Lionel Messi is likely to feature but will not start for Argentina against
Serbia & Montenegro despite a new injury setback. The Barcelona star took a
blow on the instep of his left foot in training on Wednesday, and is not in
coach Jose Pekerman's starting line-up, which was announced on Thursday.
But team doctor Donato Villani has given the teenager the all-clear to play
in Friday's Group C clash, and Pekerman said the 18-year-old was part of his
plans.
"Today, he got up without feeling any pain. If all goes well he will be on
the bench tomorrow," said Pekerman.
Messi - who has played only a handful of minutes since injuring a thigh in
February - remained rooted to the bench in his nation's 2-1 win over Ivory
Coast on Saturday.
Striker Carlos Tevez may not be fit to take his place alongside Messi on the
bench after picking up a stomach ailment.
"He vomited, a stomach problem, maybe partly to do with the heat," Pekerman
said. "As a precaution we decided he should not go out in the sun today."
