A neat ball from Arca played in Downing behind the back line but the
right-hand side of that line, Jonathan Fortune, did just enough to
prevent a clear run on goal and concede a corner.
The breakthrough came after 28 minutes.
A good tackle midway inside his own half from Arca, who was enjoying an
effective game, won possession for Boro. A low ball through the middle
picked out Viduka, close control took him from the halfway line to within
a few yards of the Charlton penalty area, from where he released James
Morrison.
A short pass found Yakubu, who still had plenty to do, but close control
took him round Carson and he slotted in from seven yards.
It was the first goal scored in open play by Boro in a first half at the
Riverside this season.
