By Gary Ward THEO WALCOTT has just become the most expensive 16-year-old in the world — and his dad thought he was rubbish! Arsenal splashed out ?5MILLION, with the promise of another ?7M, to sign the most talked-about superkid in soccer from Southampton on Friday. Dad Don never believed Theo would become a professional footballer. However, the man who discovered the boy insists he can be as good as Wayne Rooney. Scout Phil Cannon spotted Walcott as a 10-year-old playing in a Newbury schools match. And in an exclusive News of the World interview, Cannon revealed how: # He signed the youngster for Swindon even though he had played football for only a week; # Walcott joined Swindon because his friends played there; # Southampton pinched the teenager for just ?2,000. Cannon said: "I was Swindon Town's youth development officer and I went to watch another kid called Scott Doe in the schools game. "We signed him but I also saw Theo playing and asked about him. "The report came back that he'd only been playing football for a week. "I spoke to his dad and he said ‘Theo's not a very good player.' "I said ‘No, he's not, but he WILL be a good player.' "He had great pace and balance and could kick a ball well which, at a young age, is great because you can work on the rest. "His dad was stunned when I said how good he could be. "All the top players in the world have a natural gift and Theo had that gift. So we asked him to sign for Swindon. "I think he wanted to play for us as there were a couple of his friends already there." Despite Walcott senior's initial doubts, Cannon — now head of recruitment at Everton — said the youngster's family played a big part in his rapidly-rising football career. Don went to games and training sessions during Theo's seven months at Swindon's Centre of Excellence in 1998. Training Cannon added: "Theo had a nice family. Every time he came to training there was always someone with him. It will stand him in good stead having a family like that. "I saw his dad three years ago at a tournament and I didn't think he'd recognise me. But he did. He came up to me and said: ‘You were right'."
