The Yanks Are Looking for a Few Good Pitchers

洋基告訴 Nomo 的經紀人 將簽下 Nomo
希望他能在 Sunday 的比賽先發
Cashman 的助理 Jean Afterman 和 Nomo 的經紀人過去曾是同事,
並在1995年把 Nomo 引入 MLB.
The Yankees entered last night's game not knowing the identity of two of
their next five starting pitchers. It is a position of weakness in the days
before the trading deadline, but it is typical for them this season.
Kevin Brown was supposed to start tomorrow, but he is out indefinitely with
chronic back problems. The Yankees also decided to postpone the return of
Carl Pavano, who has shoulder tendinitis and was supposed to start Saturday.
The right-hander Aaron Small will start tomorrow, and the veteran Hideo Nomo
could start Sunday. Nomo was released by Tampa Bay on Monday, and the Yankees
have told his agent they want to sign him.
Don Nomura, Nomo's agent, said he was talking to the Yankees and to West
Coast teams about Nomo. "All the clubs have a lot of interest," Nomura said.
"It's us that are going to do the choosing."
General Manager Brian Cashman said only, "Time will tell," in regard to Nomo.
But Cashman's assistant, Jean Afterman, used to work with Nomura and was
instrumental in bringing Nomo from Japan to the majors in 1995.
"It's always good to have someone you know working in an organization,"
Nomura said.
Nomo, who turns 37 next month, was 5-8 with a 7.24 earned run average in 19
starts for the Devil Rays. If the Yankees added Nomo, he would be their
second veteran starter who was designated for assignment by his team, joining
Al Leiter, who was let go by Florida.
There seems to be little else available. On Sunday, the Yankees scouted
Colorado's Shawn Chacon and Pittsburgh's Mark Redman, who have a combined
record of 6-18.
"It's a tough market - less choices, less quality choices, less willing
participants," Cashman said. "More than half the clubs have a legitimate
chance to compete for a playoff spot. In the past, you had buyers and
sellers. Now, most teams are trying to buy, and you have to give to get."
With their continuing pitching problems, the Yankees have dropped the
pretense that they need to deal for a center fielder. They still might, but
Cashman admitted, "Pitching is definitely the priority, without a doubt."
Cashman and Manager Joe Torre had little to say about Brown, who saw his
doctor in Denver on Sunday and returned to the Yankees yesterday. Stuart
Hershon, the Yankees' team doctor, will consult with Brown's doctor before
the Yankees announce their course of action.
Nobody could say for sure that Brown, 40, would pitch again this season.
Brown has been awful in two starts since missing a month with a lower-back
strain, and though he said surgery was not an option for now, there may be no
point in trying to pitch.
If the doctors determine that Brown would be so limited that he could no
longer pitch effectively, the Yankees could simply release him.
"Pain has been a problem for a long time," Brown said. "It boils down to
function, going out there and being able to do the job on the field. It's not
just velocity. It's movement and location."
Brown is 4-7 with a 6.50 E.R.A. this season, and he may not be able to offer
much if he does come back.
"Really, from the get-go, he's been uncomfortable," said Torre, who met with
Brown, Cashman and the trainer Gene Monahan before the game. "His arm
strength is there, but you have to put everything else with it, and it
doesn't seem to be the case that he can do that."
As for Pavano, the Yankees stressed that he did not have a setback in his
recovery. He was supposed to throw about 50 pitches in a Gulf Coast League
game yesterday and be ready to start for the Yankees on Saturday. But the
Yankees changed his rehabilitation schedule, and Pavano will now start
tonight in the Gulf Coast League and throw about 65 pitches.
The Yankees will evaluate Pavano's timetable after seeing how he handles it.
"But he's not going backwards, he's going forward," Cashman said. "And he
would have taken the ball if we gave it to him on Saturday, there's no doubt
about that. But I think all of us involved decided it didn't make that much
sense to push him."
The Yankees have two other starters on the disabled list with shoulder
problems. Cashman said Chien-Ming Wang had been pain-free while exercising
but would not begin throwing on flat ground until Aug. 1. Jaret Wright, who
has not pitched since April 23, will pitch a minor league game Saturday in
Tampa, Fla.
Cashman said that Billy Connors, the organization's pitching troubleshooter,
had recommended that Wright return as a reliever. The Yankees have not
decided what role Wright will fill if he returns.
"We'll see, when he's ready, what our needs are," Torre said.
The Yankees could also sign the veteran left-hander Dennys Reyes, though he
was used mostly in relief for San Diego this season and would be assigned to
Class AAA Columbus.
