The Red Sox announced yesterday that the rookie will make his first career start Tuesday, plugging the spot vacated by John Smoltz. Tazawa was called up Friday from Triple-A Pawtucket, and made his debut that same night in the 15th inning of a scoreless tie against the Yankees. He gave up the game-winning home run to Alex Rodriguez. Tazawa was one of several options to make the Tuesday start with Smoltz gone, but already being on the roster gave him a major edge, said manager Terry Francona. “There's certainly other names or possibilities we could have used. I think having him here now, and putting him in that slot — moving forward, if we need to do something, this creates a little bit of flexibility. Whereas, if we send him down, call somebody back up, we're losing some of that flexibility that's very apparent, right now, we need. It's been a couple of tough weeks for us.” Tazawa has been one of the bright spots in the Boston farm system this season. The 23-year-old starter with four quality pitches has zoomed through the minors. Tazawa was signed to a $3.3-million, three-year deal in the offseason and showed great poise and killer stuff in spring training before moving to Double-A Portland. He earned a spot on the Eastern League All-Star Team and a subsequent promotion to Triple-A. He made only two starts for Pawtucket before injuries to the big-league club gave him his shot. “I will do my best for the given opportunity,” he said. “I'm a little bit used to pitching as a starter.” Tazawa will make his debut against the Detroit Tigers. “I don't know much about them, but I hope I can perform well,” Tazawa said. After making his debut in front of nearly 50,000 enemy fans in the Bronx, Tazawa is definitely looking forward to the friendlier confines of Fenway. “I had a big crowd last time, so I think this time, the crowd at Fenway will support me a lot,” he said. Tazawa was hit hard in his debut, allowing two runs in two innings and letting Yankee after Yankee make good contact. He owned up to being very nervous afterwards.
