Re: Astros trade Redding to San Diego Padres

Tim Redding had said that he'd prefer a trade to the bullpen if he couldn't wi
n a job in Houston's rotation. The Astros granted his wish on Monday, shipping
him to the Padres for catcher Humberto Quintero. Houston also kicked in some
cash toward Redding's $750,000 salary.
Redding, a 27-year-old righthander, backslid terribly last year after winning
10 games with a 3.68 ERA in his first full season as a big league starter. In
2004, he went 5-7, 5.72 in 27 games (17 starts). His strikeout-walk ratio
dipped to 56-43 in 101 innings, while hitters pounded him for a .309 average
and 15 homers.Redding has the stuff to do much better than that.He consistently
works in the low 90s with his two- and four-seam fastballs, and he has a
big-breaking curveball. He also uses a slider and changeup. But he didn't
locate his pitches consistently in 2004, and opponents took advantage.
Projected Padres fifth starter Darrell May has struggled this spring, so he
could lose his rotation spot to Redding, who has a career record of 21-28,
4.75 in 91 big league games (72 starts).
Quintero, 25, signed with the White Sox out of Venezuela in 1997 and joined
the Padres in the D'Angelo Jimenez trade in July 2002. Quintero arrived with
the reputation as a defensive specialist, as he owns a plus-plus arm and excels
at blocking errant pitches. He has hit .305 in the minors the last two years,
including .317/.348/.471 with five homers and 30 RBIs in 68 games at Triple-A
Portland in 2004, but won't project as a regular unless he develops more power.
Like most catchers, he's a below-average runner. He could serve Houston in a
backup role this year. A career .268/.314/.342 with 10 homers and 198 RBIs in
586 minor league games, Quintero has hit .242/.284/.337 with two homers and 12
RBIs in 35 big league contests.
