Two standouts from Tucson drafted

Canyon del Oro's T.J. Steele may not have a professional baseball contract
yet, but he does have options.
That is more than can be said for most of Southern Arizona's other high
school players after Major League Baseball's annual amateur draft.
Steele, a fleet-footed outfielder who has committed to the UA, was one of
two local high school standouts selected during the 50-round event that
concluded Wednesday.
He was taken in the 22nd round (674th overall) by the Houston Astros, a move
that left him a bit taken aback - but proud - to be one of just two
Tucsonans taken.
Mountain View pitcher Colin Thomson was taken by the New York Mets in the
39th round (1,169th overall).
South Mountain Community College pitcher Rene Garcia of Sunnyside was taken
in the 32nd round (951st overall) by the Diamondbacks.
Eight local high schoolers were taken in 2004.
"It did surprise me a little bit, but it's all right," Steele said. "It's
not a bad deal at all."
Whether Steele will actually sign with Houston is another question
altogether.
Steele could prove tough to sign because of his commitment to the UA, which
CDO coach Len Anderson said might have been the reason Steele fell to the
22nd round. Anderson said he was told before the draft that Steele likely
would be taken in the first 10 rounds.
"He is very signable for the right price," Anderson said. "He's very, very
fast - he has plus speed at the major-league level - and so I'm just shocked
he went in the 22nd round. The only thing I can think of is that (teams)
were afraid because he expressed a desire to attend the UA."
Steele admitted he was not ready to decide between the UA and the pros just
yet. He will make a decision sometime this summer - after his family meets
with the Astros.
"I was just hoping that I was going to be drafted," Steele said. "Going into
the draft, you can't have high expectations, because anything can happen.
"It's chaotic, but it's nice to be a part of it."
Steele, an outfielder/pitcher, helped lead the Dorados to a 20-8 record and
a berth in the Class 5A state playoffs in his final year.
He was named to the Arizona Daily Star's All-Southern Arizona first team.
