After success as a multi-sport athlete, Barthmaier was committed to LSU to play quarterback. But before signing his letter of intent, he chose to focus his arm on the baseball diamond and signed with the Houston Astros. Barthmaier began showing promise in baseball, basketball and football at a young age. It was his sophomore year in high school that he started to get attention in baseball and football. This attention helped him develop goals and work harder in order to increase his potential. That hard work paid off, because Barthmaier was given a lot of options during his senior year in high school. “It was pretty crazy,” Barthmaier said. “We had a lot of college football coaches and baseball scouts in and out. I got to see a lot of schools and experience some pretty exciting things, and I also made some pretty crucial decisions in my life about what I want to do. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” After looking at most of the big schools in the South, Barthmaier decided on LSU. At LSU, he would be able to play both football and baseball. However, in 2003 he told a scout for the Astros that he was willing to turn pro. Houston was able to sign him in the thirteenth round of the draft for more money than they gave any other 2003 draft pick. According to Baseball America's 2005 Prospect Handbook, which ranks Barthmaier as Houston's fifteenth top prospect, Major League clubs weren’t sure whether or not he would give up football. Barthmaier said that waiting to decide to go pro wasn’t a strategy to get more money. “I just wanted to get what I was worth,” Barthmaier said. “I did feel that I had a lot of potential in both sports and I should get compensated for choosing one sport over another. Everything worked out pretty well.” One of the deciding factors to play pro baseball was looking at all of the extra work a college quarterback has to put in. Starting pitchers only work one out of every five days. “Ultimately, I felt that there was more opportunity in baseball,” Barthmaier said. “There is more of a chance of injury in football. I knew baseball would be a shorter route to where I wanted ago.” Although he misses football, especially when seeing games on TV, Barthmaier is confident in his decision. After all, he currently has the sixth lowest ERA in the South Atlantic League at 2.41, which is one of the reasons that the Legends have the lowest team ERA in the SAL.
