OMAHA -- Will Koby Clemens follow in his father's footsteps and attend the
University of Texas or will he simply follow his father to work and sign on
with the Astros?
Officials in Austin have no idea which way Roger Clemens' oldest son is
leaning since Houston selected him in the eighth round (254th overall) in this
month's First-Year Player Draft. But they expect an answer, one way or another,
in the near future.
Koby Clemens signed a letter of intent to play for Texas last November. But
after getting drafted, and with the possibility of being able to play with his
father looming, speculation is that he won't be a Longhorn.
"I've had one conversation with him the last couple of weeks," said Texas
assistant coach Tommy Harmon, who handles recruiting for the Longhorns. "And I
had one with Roger and our stance is that we're looking forward to his being
here. And we want him here, but there is no final answer. He's playing in a
tournament now in Oklahoma and when he gets back, over the next few days, we
expect him to make up his mind.
"I understand Roger was with him for a bit at the tournament and so were four
or five other recruits of ours. So he'll get to experience the camaraderie and
what we're about for a little bit, I guess. They know all the information they
need to know, though, to make their decision. We don't need to do any
lobbying."
