OAKLAND -- Sixteen days before Tuesday's non-waiver trading deadline, A's
general manager Billy Beane, who had already shipped out two players who
figured heavily in his 2007 plan that has been dashed by multiple injuries,
was asked if he was done dealing.
"No," he said. "I hope not."

And maybe he's not done. Trades that require the player being moved to pass

players said to be on the block -- designated hitter Mike Piazza, for
instance -- figure to go unclaimed should they be exposed to waivers in
advance of a proposed deal.

Should the A's try to put Piazza through waivers before dealing him in August,
he'd likely clear. A team claiming him would be on the hook for whatever
Piazza is still owed on his one-year, $8.5 million deal; that amount was
about $2.88 million as of Tuesday.

Forst said the A's would explore waiver deals as sellers and buyers, noting,

had the teams talking about a trade what would have sent Blanton to Los

The deal broke down, however, so instead of heading to Southern California to

about $600,000 in the deal.
