The decision to hire O'Brien also cleared the air on the status of Portland
Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks, who was widely speculated as someone the
Sixers would pursue. The Sixers did not request permission to speak with
Cheeks.
"Unfortunately, there has always been a cloud, and a threat of rain, over
that issue," Trail Blazers general manager John Nash said. "We get enough
rain in Portland. It's good that the sun is now shining in Philadelphia."

Nash, also a St. Joe's graduate, couldn't resist adding,
"It's the year of St. Joseph's."
