NBA Draft Lottery reaction
http://blog.oregonlive.com/blazers/2008/05/nba_draft_lottery_reaction.html
Drink it in Blazers fans. I hope you were all able to watch yesterday's NBA
Draft Lottery and enjoy it, for the last time. Because after yesterday, there
will be no more visits to the lottery for the Portland Trail Blazers.
Portland has built a contender with successful drafts the past two years. Now
it's time to let those ingredients grow and mature together, while mixing in
some minor tweaking and a vet here or there. While the Blazers may or may not
use their No. 13 pick in this year's draft, Portland will still add at least
one (hopefully two) impact pick (Greg Oden) from last year's draft. That's
better than any selection Kevin Pritchard could make next month.
And though the Blazers ended up with their most probable pick (13), they were
digits away from nearly shocking the league two years in a row:
The Trail Blazers came this close to receiving another jolt of odds-defying
lottery luck Tuesday.
The winning combination of pingpong balls that surprisingly delivered the
Chicago Bulls the No. 1 pick in this summer's NBA draft were 11-9-13-7. One
of the Blazers' six combinations was 11-9-13 . . . and 12.
"I was trying to do everything I did last year," Blazers general manager
Kevin Pritchard said. "I tried Jedi mind tricks on the balls, everything.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work."
Unbelievably close. As Joe Freeman writes, conventional logic would show the
next ingredient to this sizzling Blazers stew would be experience rather than
youth. But Pritchard isn't looking past the draft options:
Pritchard said Tuesday there are two areas where the Blazers need improvement
to contend for the playoffs next season: athleticism/speed in the backcourt
and shooting. Those holes can be plugged in this year's draft, Pritchard
said, adding that an "impact player" will be available at No. 13 and the
Blazers already have a list of "seven or eight" possibilities.
It is not unheard of for future All-Stars to be selected at or near pick No.
13. Kobe Bryant (1996) and Karl Malone (1985) were No. 13 picks who blossomed
into All-Stars, and one of the best players in Blazers history, Clyde
Drexler, was the No. 14 pick in 1983.
