Heading into the season, Martell Webster was just happy to be healthy, back and able to contribute for the Blazers after sitting out all but five minutes of the 2008-09 season with a foot injury. Prior to the season, Webster, who started at small forward in 70 games for the Blazers in 2007-08, not only supported last year's starter Nic Batum to remain as the starter but lobbied for it. After Batum suffered the first of what would be many Blazers' injuries this season, Webster was again the starte r in Portland. Webster started 49 games this season before surrendering his starting spot whe n Batum returned from his shoulder injury. Prior to Batum's return, Webster averaged 10.9 points per game. After Batum returned, in a backup role with fewer minutes, Webster averaged 6.4 points per contest. In his fifth season with the Blazers, Webster had his second-most productive campaign. His numbers were just shy of career highs of 10.7 points, 3.9 rebound and 1.2 assists in 28.4 minutes per game in 2007-08. Webster also got his first taste of playoff basketball. In six playoff games he averaged 9.8 points (on 42 percent shooting), 4.3 rebounds in 25.5 minutes per game. He struggled from beyond the arc, shooting 29 percent (5-for-17).
