Among the winners was Goderich native Brock Dykxhoorn of the Uni-President 7-Ele ven Lions of the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL). Dykxhoorn received the Claude Pelletier Award as top pitcher. From his home in Taiwan Dykxhoorn told the CBN that receiving the award was an h onour. “There are so many great Canadian baseball players playing around the world rig ht now, and to be named the pitcher of the year is incredible,” said Dykxhoorn. “The Canadian baseball community has grown so much with all of the young talent in recent years as well as the established veteran guys who have gotten us to t his point, and to be part of that is always a great honour.” The Claude Pelletier Award is named after Claude Pelletier (Ste-Lezare, Que.), a long-time area scout. Beating out a diverse talent of pitchers playing in independent leagues, Dykxhoo rn collected eight of nine first-place votes for 43 points to be named the recip ient of the Claude Pelletier award. Dominant for the CPBL’s Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions in 2021, in 27 appearances including 26 starts the six-foot-eight, right-hander Dykxhoorn posted a 17-4 re cord and a 1.83 ERA. He also managed to fan 157 batters in 181 2/3 innings in hi s MVP-calibre season. Dykxhoorn’s WHIP was also an impressive 0.886. Leading in close to every statistical category, Dykxhoorn has his Uni-President Lions poised for a return to the Taiwan Series, where he was named series MVP la st year. “This season has been truly incredible. With COVID restriction and being across the world it has brought plenty of challenges, but I’m proud of the work that myself and my team have put in,” added Dykxhoorn. The pandemic resulted in a two-month pause in the season, but Dykxhoorn remained a constant strength for the Lions. The 27-year-old ranked at the top of almost every significant pitching statistic al category for Canadians in the foreign or independent ranks, including wins, i nnings pitched, strikeouts and WHIP. The Houston Astros selected Dykxhoorn in the sixth round of the 2014 MLB draft a nd he toed the rubber for parts of five seasons in their organization before hea ding overseas. The Goderich Seahawks and Canadian Junior National Team alumnus reflected on inf luences that helped propel him to become a sixth-round draft pick and eventually an international star. “Without these people, there’s no way my career would be where it is today,” Dykxhoorn explained. “I’d like to thank my family and friends and, of course, my wife Carly for the support every year, but in particular this year with all of the challenges.” For now, the off-season means a return to Ontario to recover from a long season and spend time with family and friends.
