Blue Jays add veteran catcher Jose Molina
The Toronto Blue Jays may not be expected to do much on the field this year,
but they should be able to see a World Series ring.
On Friday, the team signed catcher Jose Molina to a one-year, US$400,000
contract with a club option for a second year at US$1.2-million.
Molina, 34, hit .217 with one home run and 11 RBIs in 52 games with the New
York Yankees last season spent mainly as a back up to Jorge Posada.
He is of three brothers who are all major league catchers — his older
brother Bengie played for the Blue Jays in 2006, the same year younger
brother Yadier won a World Series with St. Louis.
In fact, all three brothers have won World Series titles, as both Bengie and
Jose were part of the 2002 Anaheim Angels championship.
Toronto’s signing of Molina as a back-up to presumed starter John Buck
likely means Raul Chavez is bound to start another year at Triple-A Las Vegas.
The 36-year-old Chavez opened last year in Triple-A but came up after Michael
Barrett got hurt and hit .258 in 51 games playing behind Rod Barajas.
Chavez re-signed with Toronto on a minor league contract earlier this season.
The Blue Jays made room for Jose Molina on their 40-man roster by
transferring injured starter Jesse Litsch to the 60-day disabled list.
