MEXICO 1-0 BRAZIL
19 June 2005
by FIFAworldcup.com
Mexico secured a memorable victory over Brazil to book their place in the
semi-finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup as Jared Borgetti's second-half
header proved enough to decide an exciting Group B match in Hanover on Sunday.
Mexico's win takes them top of the section with six points, leaving Brazil
second with three points, ahead of their next opponents Japan on goal
difference. Brazil must avoid defeat in that match in Cologne to join Mexico
in the last four. As for bottom-placed Greece, this result confirmed their
elimination.
The only goal arrived via the head of Borgetti in the 59th minute after the
same player had missed the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot
in the first period. Twice the kick was ordered to be retaken by referee
Roberto Rosetti and the third time Dida dived to turn Borgetti's shot around
the post.
Festival of football Heralded as the most colourful clash of the first round,
this all-Latin American encounter certainly lived up to its considerable
promise. Even the weather suited the occasion, with the stadium in Hanover
bathed in warm sunlight. Having suffered from the cold at the start of the
competition, the players were suddenly performing in conditions more akin
to what they are accustomed to back home. In a samba-infused atmosphere,
the two teams' supporters were decked out in opposing oceans of green and
yellow and packed the ground to the rafters.
In accordance with his avowed intention yesterday, Brazil coach Carlos
Alberto Parreira submitted a match sheet similar to the one for the game
against Greece. For the Tricolores, Ricardo Lavolpe opted for Ramon Morales
and Gonzalo Pineda in midfield with Gerardo Torrado and Jaime Lozano on the
bench alongside Barcelona ace Rafael Marquez, who was still not match-fit.
Clearly expecting a tough test, the Mexicans opted to take the game to the
Brazilians in the early stages. Starved of possession, the Brazilians had
to bide their time. The young Robinho picked up the ball in midfield and
let fire, but he saw his initial effort blocked by a defender before again
testing the Mexican rearguard two minutes later.
Brazil begin brightly
It took Brazil a quarter of an hour to establish a monopoly of the ball. Put
through in the right-hand channel, the crafty Adriano bore down on goal but
the Mexican keeper Oswaldo Sanchez stood firm. It was primarily one-way
traffic but Mexico were holding out well.
On 29 minutes, the Mexicans had a golden opportunity to go in front when
Borgetti went down after tussling with Roque Junior in the penalty area.
The striker stepped up and converted the spot-kick but before he could
begin celebrating, referee Roberto Rosetti ordered a retake for encroachment.
The same happened after his second attempt which rebounded off the crossbar.
This time Brazilian protests fell on deaf ears, and for the third time in a
few minutes, Borgetti ran up to the spot. This time, however, Dida dived to
his right to save.
Shaken, the Selecao proceeded to step it up a gear. Sanchez suddenly had a
flurry of shots to face, with Adriano in particular hitting a couple of
powerful strikes that whizzed wide of the Mexican goal.
Into the second half and the Brazilians and Mexicans continued where they
had left off. All that was needed was the spark of a goal to light the blue
touch paper. The Aztecs enjoyed plenty of possession, albeit without really
threatening Dida's goal. For Brazil, the likes of Kaka and Adriano were
struggling to pick holes in the Mexico defence but as the Brazilian rhythm
grew in intensity, the tension became palpable, on the field as well as in
the stands.
A goal to remember
Cool as cucumbers, the Mexicans persevered with their swift passing game,
launching several lightning forays towards Dida's goal. One such counterattack
led by Ramon Morales breached the Brazilian rearguard to threaten the AC Milan
keeper's goal, but an outstretched leg from Lucio diverted the ball behind
for a corner. It would prove only a temporary reprieve as the ball came over
and Jared Borgetti rose highest to send a clinical header past the stranded
Dida into the net. After his triple-penalty disappointment in the first half,
the Mexican striker was understandably jubilant.
There was suddenly a new urgency to Brazil's play, and a yellow wave swept
repeatedly towards the Mexican goal. Worried by the way the game had been
turned on its head, Parreira made an immediate double substitution, with
Renato and Ricardo Oliveira replacing Emerson and Robinho. Lavolpe followed
suit, bringing on fresh legs in the shape of Mario Mendez with a quarter of
an hour still to play. Brazil, however, were playing stuttering football,
with Ronaldinho for once unable to produce the wizardry required to rescue
his side.
The scorer of a splendid free-kick against Greece, Juninho Pernambucano was
also introduced late on, but he too could do little to loosen the Mexicans'
stranglehold. Indeed as Brazil's attacks repeatedly petered out or fell foul
of the linesman's flag, Lavolpe's men threatened another goal as on one
breakaway as a Mendez cross-shot rolled narrowly wide.
Pacing the touchline in frustration, Parreira by now seemed resigned to
defeat. The night belonged to Mexico.

Orz
Anyway,
Gilberto Silva(or Juninho)
