Hardy still sidelined; Hart back in lineup
Brewers shortstop's back pain to keep him out a few days
--------------------------------------------------------
MINNEAPOLIS -- J.J Hardy was out of Sunday's lineup for the second consecutive
game with lower back pain.
"J.J. Hardy is still no good," manager Ken Macha said.
Macha said Hardy would probably miss "at least a couple more days."
Hardy exited Friday's 11-3 loss to Minnesota in the bottom of the fourth inning
with back spasms.
The Brewers' medical team used boating vernacular to document Hardy's current
condition.
"As they wrote in the report: listing," Macha said. "Thought that was a
nautical term. You have a boat on the ocean, it starts listing."
At this point, Macha put up his right hand and teetered it to demonstrate.
Listing, in nautical terms, is when a boat inclines to one side.
"He's walking around crooked," Macha said of Hardy.
As bad as that sounds, the Brewers are not showing concern yet.
"They feel confident that he's going to be all right in a couple days," Macha
said.
Hardy has suffered from the injury before, most recently prior to Spring
Training when he "started to get back into baseball stuff." Hardy said the pain
lasted for two days.
The Metrodome's artificial turf may have played a role in the injury, according
to Hardy.
Hardy is not participating in baseball activities until his back improves. He
is receiving heat and message therapy.
In Hardy's absence, the Brewers on Sunday trotted out the same infield
alignment that started the night before: Prince Fielder at first, Casey
McGehee at second, Bill Hall at third and Craig Counsell at shortstop.
The Brewers received better news on outfielder Corey Hart, who, as expected,
returned to Milwaukee's lineup Sunday after getting a day off due to a right
hand bruise.
Hart said that he could have played Saturday and that the injury wasn't a
concern. He added that his hand felt better Sunday.
"It didn't hurt to get [Jody] Gerut in there and give [Hart] a day off,"
Macha said.
Gerut -- acquired from the Padres via trade on Thursday -- made his first
start for the Brewers on Saturday and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run
scored.
