Ford, it's not a matter of if he will return to action as a member of the Milwaukee Bucks, it's a matter of when. Ford, in fact, has gone so far as to vow that he will be back. "I will play in the NBA again," Ford said. "There's no doubt in my mind. That's not even a question." Ford has not be able to do anything basketball-related since he took a frightening fall and suffered a spinal injury in a game last Feb. 24 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He underwent surgery on May 5 and has been going through a rehabilitation process since. Ford played well as a rookie last season, averaging 7.1 points and 6.5 assists per game in 55 games as a starter. The Bucks have set no timetable for his return. "That's great," coach Terry Porter said when asked about Ford's vow to return. "The doctors, I think, have said that he's coming back but they don't know a timetable. That's the big thing. Each process, he has to get permission to do more and more things. He's only pushing as far as the doctors have told him he can push. "We're moving. But we just may be moving slower than I think everyone wants us to." About all that is known for certain is that if Ford does return, it won't be for quite a while. Porter has said it would probably take Ford as long as two or three months to get back into playing condition after he had been given clearance to return to basketball-related activities. "I think you have to respect them for not giving a time schedule because if they did give me a time schedule, then I'd be looking forward to that date," Ford said. "And when that date got here and I wasn't ready, that would be a setback. So for them not to give me a day, I think, really gives me the opportunity to stay focused and continue to push myself. "It's my first time in this situation so I'm not sure as far as time frame. I don't want to risk anything or doing anything that I'm not supposed to do. So for the most part, I continue to stay on plan with what they have planned for me and I just keep it that way." Even though he was unable to practice, the Bucks made a concerted effort to keep Ford involved with the team during the exhibition season. He attended and observed practice, sat in on the meetings and traveled with the team. When the Bucks visited Dallas for an exhibition game against the Mavericks, Ford traveled along and was able to visit with his mother, who had come from Houston to see him. Porter said it was important for Ford to continue feeling a part of things. "We're trying to keep him abreast of everything that's going on," Porter said. "He's traveling with us and he's at all the practices. I think it's critical for him to just feel a part of the team. We're putting in some new sets and so he can see some of the stuff we're trying to do different this year." Despite his situation, Ford has managed to keep his spirits up and maintain an upbeat attitude. Guard Mo Williams, Ford's close friend and new teammate, has said Ford is handling the injury much better than he would ever be able to do, and Porter agrees that Ford has kept a positive demeanor, at least outwardly. "I'm sure deep inside he's disappointed," Porter said. "The young man has worked all his life to get to this level and now there has been a little halt to it. A pause, I guess you would say, along the journey for him. But his spirits have been pretty good as far as how he's expressed them outward. He seems to be upbeat." Ford intends to keep working on the road to recovery. "I think at some point, I will be able to play basketball again," he said. "When, I'm not sure. I have to continue to let my body continue to heal. "That's pretty much the only step I can have is to let my body heal the right way." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.115.207.44
