Chin-Feng Chen is either a master at disguising his emotions or an expert in
keeping an even-keeled attitude.
The 51s outfielder hit a solo home run in the second inning Monday night, then
walked into the clubhouse and learned he was leaving Las Vegas for the major
leagues.
The Los Angeles Dodgers called up Chen after the 51s' 6-4 loss to the Tacoma
Rainiers at Cashman Field, but the 26-year-old from Taiwan showed no emotion.
"It's good," he said. "I don't think about it too much. I just come here and
keep working hard."
Chen, who just started his third Triple-A season, has played 275 games for
Las Vegas. He's long been considered one of the Dodgers' top prospects, but
they haven't given him an extended audition yet.
He has been a consistent run producer for the 51s. He hit .284 with 26 homers
and 84 RBIs in 2002, and returned last season to hit .281 with 26 homers and
86 RBIs.
In brief stays with Los Angeles after each of those seasons, Chen got a total
of only six at-bats.
An injury to Dodgers outfielder Jason Werth opened the spot for Chen, who is
hitting .316 through five games.
Las Vegas manager Terry Kennedy informed Chen of his promotion Monday, but
said he's not sure if Chen will be with the Dodgers for an extended time.
"After all the bad news I have to tell these guys, I'm certainly going to tell
them the good news," Kennedy said. "But I don't think he believed me at first
because we screw around with him so much."
Chen has been in the Dodgers' organization since 1999 and has learned to speak
English, though he's often shy.
"I guess when he first got here he didn't speak a lick of English. He has a
pretty good feel for the American sense of humor," Kennedy said. "We tease
him and he knows it doesn't mean anything, and he teases back. I'm just
getting to know these guys. He's a really nice kid."
Chen is not a vocal guy in the clubhouse, but does relate well with hitting
coach George Hendrick.
"I've never seen him before this spring, but George tells me he's improved
every year," Kennedy said.
"Chen hits the ball really hard and he's got good power the other way, which
he showed tonight."
