Dodgers' Rohan off to fast start

VERO BEACH — Vero Beach Dodgers utilityman Jimmy Rohan might not make it
to the major leagues as a knuckle-ball specialist, but it's a trick the
21-year old is not willing to give up.
"When I warm up, I mess around with the knuckleball," said Rohan, who is
hitting .290 this year. "Last year and the year before, I'd get into the
pitching coach's ear, you know, 'Hey, if you give me an inning, just one
inning that's all I'll ask for.'"
In his minor-league career, Rohan has 2 1/3 innings pitched, including an
inning last year with Vero Beach. But the knuckleball, a pitch that floats
and moves sharply at the last second, hasn't fluttered properly during that
span, meaning Rohan might have to stick to one of the other six positions
he plays.
Rohan has a 15.43 career ERA.
"It depends, when it's on, it's on," said Rohan, who began throwing the pitch
in middle school. "But when it's not, it's not good."
That has not stopped Rohan from throwing it in warmups, making it exceedingly
difficult to find a warm-up partner.
"Nobody wants to play catch with me because I throw a knuckleball," he said.
Offensively, Rohan has gotten off to his best start since signing with the
Los Angeles Dodgers as a non-drafted free agent out of high school. Being in
Vero Beach for an extended period of time has helped Rohan, who bounced around
to three different levels last season.
"I moved around a lot," Rohan said. "Staying in one place is, it's actually
helping me a lot because I'm with the team more. And just staying in one place,
I don't have to move anywhere.
"It's tough, but it's part of the game, and you've got to get used to it."

Why did you choose to sign as a non-drafted free agent out of high school?
I had signed to go to a junior college, and I wasn't much of a student in
high school. So the one chance I got to play pro ball and not go to school,
I took it in a second. ... My decision was probably the best decision I've
made.
What was the last movie you watched?
Man on Fire
Who was your favorite player growing up?
When I was little, I really liked Ken Griffey (Jr.), but all in all,
Alex Rodriguez.
