Abreu's big bat clears way

CHICAGO --
No A-Rod, no problem.
With Alex Rodriguez home to be with his new baby daughter, Bobby Abreu
supplied the Yankees' power last night. His grand slam made a winner of
Chien-Ming Wang in a 9-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular
Field.
Wang (4-0) pitched in and out of trouble for six innings and was actually
behind when the Yankees decided to take him out. But Abreu's seventh career
slam, one of three Yankees homers, made Wang the winning pitcher.
"This team is built just in case someone's hurt or missing," said Johnny
Damon, whose three-run homer in the eighth iced the game.
Jason Giambi, who also homered, came out in the eighth after taking a
seventh-inning grounder off his right thumb.
"There was a little swelling," manager Joe Girardi said. "I don't
anticipate it being a problem (today)."
Wang is the first pitcher since Dwight Gooden in 1986 to reach 50 career
wins by his 85th start and the first Yankee to do it since Ron Guidry
in 1979. Also, Wang is the first Yankees starter to win his first four
decisions since Kevin Brown in 2004. The Yankees are 5-0 when Wang starts,
3-1 behind Andy Pettitte and 3-9 otherwise.
"He didn't have his great stuff tonight," Girardi said. "He found a way
to keep them in check. The great pitchers learn how to do that."
Down 3-2 to Jose Contreras in the seventh, the Yankees started the rally
with a one-out walk by Morgan Ensberg and Melky Cabrera's soft single to
left. Boone Logan relieved Contreras, and Damon beat out an infield hit
to load the bases.
Octavio Dotel came in and struck out Derek Jeter. But Abreu roped a 2-0
pitch 382 feet the other way into the left-field stands for his third
homer of the season. It was his first grand slam as a Yankee, his last
coming Aug. 26, 2005, for Philadelphia. It also gave Abreu the team RBI
lead with 14.
"There's a lot of capable hitters in this lineup," Girardi said. "If you
count on one guy all year, it's going to be a long year."
Contreras (1-2) has lost five straight starts against the Yankees, the
team that originally signed him after he defected from Cuba. Wang allowed
three runs in six innings on a season-high 10 hits, making 105 pitches
which was also a season high. He walked two and struck out five.
The White Sox left 13 runners on base in the game.
Chicago broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the fifth. With one out, Orlando
Cabrera singled, Jim Thome walked and Paul Konerko doubled. Wang was able
to leave both runners stranded with a strikeout and a groundout.
After the Yankees had taken an early lead, the White Sox scored twice in
the second to tie the game, as No. 9 hitter Juan Uribe doubled on a 0-2
pitch to drive in Carlos Quentin and Joe Crede.
Giambi -- who had been 0-for-6 in his career against Contreras -- led off
the second inning with an opposite-field homer for a 2-0 Yankees lead.
It was Giambi's third homer of the season, his first homer and third hit
off a pitcher other than Boston's Mike Timlin.
The Yankees had scored a first-inning run for the first time on this trip.
Damon led off with a double -- a gift from the official scorer -- off the
glove of Konerko, the Chicago first baseman. Damon went to third on Abreu's
soft, one-out single and scored on Hideki Matsui's fielder's choice.
With the injured Rodriguez absent, Matsui batted cleanup for the second
time since 2005 and the first time since last July 5.
"I'm very comfortable putting him in the 4 slot," Girardi said. "He's a
great RBI guy. He's had great at-bats all year. He's the natural guy to
put in there without Alex."
Jorge Posada started at catcher last night for the first time in two weeks.
"I'm happy," said Posada, who had been kept from catching (other than an
emergency inning April 13) by a strained right shoulder. "I'm happy that
they really took the time to make sure that everything was fine.
"They gave me all the time in the world to get back. I appreciate that.
You don't understand it. You want to be out there. But I'm happy I'm back
now."
About 4 1/2 hours before last night's game, Posada played catch in the
outfield. Then he made a handful of throws from behind the plate to second
base.
"The arm strength is there," Girardi said. "To me, (today) might even be
more important than (last night), because you've got to see how he responds
after playing."
Girardi said the team will keep three catchers until Posada shows he can
catch a few days in a row. Chad Moeller, the third catcher, is out of
minor-league options and would have to clear waivers to go back to the minors.
