Tomas Berdych is feeling confident about his chances of winning a Grand Slam in
2008 after being voted the Czech Republic's Player of the Year.
Berdych described 2008 as the best season of his career, despite finishing 14th
in the ATP rankings for the second consecutive year
The 22-year-old also believes that he is capable of winning one of the Grand
Slams next season, saying that every player within the top 15 has a chance of
claming a major.
Q: Tomas, how has your tennis changed since you won your first Player of the
Year award?
TB: I cannot say that I have been going through a big change. But you simply
feel in yourself that it is better and better with every year, that I can dare
to say. Despite the last season ending up with me being in the same ranking as
I was at the start, I would place it higher. Hopefully, there will be an even
better year for me.
(Berdych說今年儘管年終排名和去年一樣,他覺得還是有不錯的進步)
Q: Have you matured so much that you are able to win a Grand Slam?
TB: A hard question. Anyway, tennis nowadays is so even that every player in
the top 10 or top 15 can make it. Of course, it is made difficult by
Rafael Nadal at the French Open and Roger Federer everywhere else. It can
happen though, it definitely can happen.
(有點心酸的回答,加油吧)
Q: You reached your first Grand Slam quarter-final at Wimbledon this year. Is
that a turning point?
TB: Certainly. It was like if you manage to win a big tournament, then to win
it again a year later, and then you have a two-year break during which
everybody around you reminds you of the tournament. So the Wimbledon
quarter-final is nice. The US Open wasn't bad either from my point of view. I
started it wonderfully but, eventually, I had to retire in the last 16 match
due to health problems.
Q: Was that the worst moment of your 2007 campaign?
TB: There were some really unpleasant moments. The least successful period was
the tour of the United States, the tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami. I ate
something bad there and it affected my performance. What a pity, I had a good
draw and could have showed big things.
(看來美國真的不是福地)
Q: As a consequence, you failed to qualify for the Masters Cup in Shanghai,
right?
TB: Yes. It is key to win some points at all nine Masters events and at the
grand slams.
Q: Therefore, will you remember the 2007 season mainly for missing the Masters
Cup?
TB: Not quite like that. I would split it into good and bad memories. Among the
good ones I put the triumph in Halle, the Wimbledon quarter-final and also the
Davis Cup. But I also cannot forget the unsuccessful spell in the
United States, nor the Masters Cup.
