After bursting onto the scene in 2006, Polish teen sensation Agnieszka
Radwanska continued her rise up the ranks in 2007 with another wonderful year
on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. After a relatively slow start to the season the
18-year-old found her form during the summer months, winning a maiden title and
breaking into the Top 30 for the first time in her fledgling career.
Radwanska has long been touted as one of the outstanding young talents on Tour
after a stellar junior career, which was highlighted by triumphs at both
Wimbledon and Roland Garros. Her breakthrough in the senior ranks came one year
later, when, as a wildcard, she reached the quarterfinals at her very first
Tour event in Warsaw - the run included a memorable opening-round victory over
the No.6 seed Anastasia Myskina.
This success was followed up by an even more impressive fourth-round run on her
Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon, where she stormed through the draw before
eventually bowing out to No.2 seed Kim Clijsters. Less than five months later,
after a promising indoor season - highlighted by a semifinal run in Luxembourg
– Radwanska stood on the verge of a Top 50 debut at the tender age of
17-years-old.
Last season Radwanska picked up from where she left off in 2006, reaching
quarterfinals on the clay of Istanbul and Palermo before writing her name in
the history books by becoming the first Pole to win a Tour title in Stockholm.
Despite her Swedish success, the high point of the Krakow-based star's season
came in New York, when she sensationally defeated Maria Sharapova en route to
the fourth round of the US Open.
The European indoor season brought yet more joy for Radwanska, as she scored
another quarterfinal finish in Zu"rich, thus helping her finish the year with
a career-high ranking of No.25. With her undoubted natural talent and big-match
temperament, 2008 is sure to bring more glory and the stage is set for another
memorable 12 months.
