Berdych joins Stepanek on sidelines
Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych has withdrawn from Czech Republic’s team
for its upcoming Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarterfinal against Chile in
Coquimbo with a stomach injury.
Berdych, who lost to Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon final on Sunday, has been
replaced by 26-year-old Ivo Minar.
Minar has played two previous Davis Cup rubbers, losing to USA’s Andy
Roddick 64 46 62 63 in 2007 and Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro 61 63 63
in 2009.
Berdych’s absence follows the news that teammate Radek Stepanek is set to
miss the tie due to a left knee injury. The Czechs now line up with Minar,
Jan Hajek, Lukas Dlouhy and Franticek Cermak.
Meanwhile, Chile is also without its top player, Fernando Gonzalez, after he
was ruled out for ten weeks with knee problems. Nicolas Massu will lead the
home side, alongside Jorge Aguilar, Paul Capdeville and Cristobal
Saavedra-Corvalan.
