Italy's Marcello Lippi is a contender to become the next Manchester United
boss, reports in Italy are suggesting.
The tactician's contract with the Italian Football Federation expires at the
end of the World Cup and there are doubts regarding his future.
Despite reaching the World Cup Final, the tactician is seriously considering
leaving Italian football for an adventure abroad.
Lippi is set to hold talks with FIGC commissioner Guido Rossi next week who
will try to convince him to remain for the next two years.
But the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper suggests that the Coach will reject that
opportunity after a testing few months at the helm following the explosion of
the Calciopoli scandal which saw him, and his son Davide, questioned by
magistrates.
Should Lippi walk then it is understood that Manchester United will make their
move in order to prepare for the post Sir Alex Ferguson era at Old Trafford.
Ferguson is a great admirer of Lippi after the epic Champions League battles
between Juventus and the Red Devils in the 1990s.
Ferguson sees Lippi as his ideal successor and allegedly wants the Italian to
flank him during the 2006-07 campaign, before handing him full control of the
side for the season after.
Lippi, who has refused to comment on his future with the Azzurri until after
Sunday's Final against France, has admitted in the past that he would like to
try his luck in a foreign League.
He was also a contender to be named as the new Real Madrid boss, but that
honour was handed to Fabio Capello this week.
