Lecce have fired Coach Zdenek Zeman after their 2-1 home defeat to
Vicenza on Friday, replacing him with Giuseppe Papadopulo.
The southerners are struggling in the bottom half of the Serie B table
with 20 points from 18 matches, and the 10th defeat – the fourth one
at home – proved to be fatal for the 59-year-old Czech tactician.
“The club wants to thank Zeman for what he has done until now
and wishes him all the best for the future,”
read a statement on the club's website.
Zeman's second stint with the Giallorossi ended after he had celebrated
his 250th appearance on a Serie B bench, after he had lead Lecce to
a fairly easy stay in Serie A in 2004-05.
Papadopulo, a defender with Lazio in his playing days,
started his professional Coaching career in 1987 at Sorrento,
before moving on to Avellino, Livorno, Fidelis Andria,
Lucchese and Crotone, before his best spell at Siena from 2001 to 2004,
where he guided the team from Serie C1 to a historic promotion in Serie A.
Papadopulo then moved to Lazio in 2004-05 and was called to Sicily
last January to replace Gigi Del Neri at the helm of Palermo.
The Rosanero ended the season in fifth spot after the Calciopoli verdicts,
but Papadopulo decided to rescind his contract at the end of the term.
Lecce chief Giovanni Semeraro spoke personally to Zeman to explain
the club's decision on Christmas Eve.
“I had already started considering the idea of changing the Coach
in the past few weeks as I was not pleased with the team's performances,”
explained the President.
“This seemed the best moment to do this, in order to take advantage
of the long break and the winter market. I hope Papadopulo will give
new motivations to the lads, I must admit that they seemed discouraged
in the last matches.”
The new Coach will be presented on December 28
at the Stadio Via del Mare in Lecce.
