Both of Caglioni's samples tested positive and the Italian Football Federation’s disciplinary panel opted for a severe punishment, even if the player had admitted his guilt. “The result was due to a cigarette containing cocaine that was offered to me by a person I did not know inside a disco. It was a thoughtless action,” Caglioni stated when questioned. “The presence of forbidden substances in Caglioni's body represents a violation of the Anti-Doping Code and his defensive statements can in no way exclude his responsibility,” read the announcement.
