Unless all the present candidates turn down the Celtics' offer,
or cannot come to terms, the next coach will come from a group
that includes Lionel Hollins, Doc Rivers, Paul Westphal, Dwane
Casey, Jeff Hornacek and Avery Johnson. Also, Atlanta head coach
Terry Stotts would be on the Celtics' radar if he is not retained
by the Hawks.
The first three have been mentioned in the Celts' mix pretty much
since Jim O'Brien [news] left the club in January, but Casey,
Hornacek and Johnson are new. Casey, an assistant with Seattle,
was close to getting the Toronto job last summer. Hornacek has
been out of the game since retiring from the Jazz four years ago,
while the 39-year-old Johnson played this season for Golden State.
He had 16 points in a Warriors loss to the Celtics earlier this
month.
Celtics managing partner Wyc Grousbeck said yesterday that interim
coach John Carroll still has a chance to retain his position, but
sources disputed that contention.
