A perfect afternoon was completed by a deserved 3-0 win as current day Chelsea completed what has been a confidence boosting pre-season. The sun-drenched conditions prevented the game from being an all-action affair but strikes from Didier Drogba and Scott Parker and an own goal as well as the Zola appearance gave everyone plenty to cheer about. In the blistering heat, William Gallas had Damien Duff making the first sprint of the afternoon as early as the first minute, on to a long ball which Duff collected behind the Zaragoza defence. It was a clear chance but the shot didn’t beat the reach of keeper Garcia who caught with a stretch. Duff, playing on the left of midfield was in action again soon after, hitting a good low cross which Gudjohnsen couldn’t collect but almost straight away after, the opening goal did come. It took only eight minutes for Chelsea to take the lead. Ferreira, who has arrived with a reputation as a dangerous crosser, hit in a testing ball from deep and Didier Drogba was well placed at the far post to tap a low shot into the net. That nerve settling first goal at the Bridge was already under his belt. After taking the lead, Chelsea enjoyed a long spell of good possession, essential in the conditions, but chances for either side were scarce up to the break. Zaragoza’s first shot of the game didn’t arrive until the 25th minute, a wildly high effort from lone striker Villa. After 31 minutes, another shot from Gracia was just as far off-target. Chelsea despite seeing plenty of the ball didn’t threaten the Spaniards goal again in the first-half. Three changes at the break were made by Jose Mourinho, Carvalho coming on for Gallas, Parker for Duff and Kezman for Gudjohnsen. Three minutes after the restart, Chelsea’s lead was doubled and again Ferreira’s crossing was vital. Lampard’s great ball from deep found him and when the right-back drove the ball low into the area, Milito, under pressure from the Chelsea attack, turned the ball into his own net. Chelsea almost conceded a soft goal a couple of minutes later, Drogba’s attempted clearing header putting the ball back into the danger area and then Cech making a poor attempt to block Alvaro’s header. But the ball stayed out. On 56 minutes a sharp save from Garcia prevented John Terry heading in Lampard’s corner. Glen Johnson replaced Geremi as the hour approached but went to right- back with Ferreira pushing forward into midfield and then with 63 minutes on the clock came the biggest ovation of all. Gianfranco Zola replaced Drogba in attack. The subs kept coming, Zaragoza making multiple changes and Cudicini replacing Cech for the final quarter of the match, followed by Huth for Terry. On 76 minutes came the moment of Zola magic the crowd had been impatiently waiting for. Receiving a ball from Makelele, he showed that the legendary vision was still in full working order, spotting Lampard’s run and putting him clean through on goal. Lampard could well have shot himself but opted to square to the unmarked Kezman who unfortunately hadn’t read the script, incredibly slicing his shot wide. With eight minutes remaining, Scott Parker showed him how it should be done – turning in a pass from Kezman himself after a remarkably similar move; Lampard this time providing the penetrating pass. Somehow the game wouldn’t have been complete without a Zola free-kick. It looked like we may not be treated to one but with two minutes remaining, the Zaragoza defence obliged with a foul. It was from a narrow angle but the maestro still forced keeper Garcia into a punched save. The cameo was completed when Lampard was inches away from volleying a Zola corner in. After the game, Franco spoke to the fans from the pitch and performed a lap of honour. The applause is still echoing around Stamford Bridge.
