This afternoon, Chelsea announced (after several days of speculation and
rumour) that they had competed the signing of Czech international
midfielder Jiri Jarosik from CSKA Moscow. A tall and versatile player,
Jarosik signs for the next two and a half years.
His arrival at SW6 was originally intended to be a loan until the end of
the season, but it would seem that CSKA were not keen on this option.
Interestingly, however, Chelsea's press officer, Helen Wood, told
UEFA.com that whilst the contract is for two-and-a-half years, Chelsea
have the option of canceling it after six months.
No mention is made in the UK as to how much this particular transfer will
cost - although the figure mentioned in the Czech media is that he cost
the Blues £5,8 million.
Jarosik is a big lad, towering at 1m94. Curiously, this is exactly the
same height as Petr, so one wonders what the Czechs are feeding their
kids to be so tall. Jiri celebrated his 27th birthday last October.
Jiri should be available for selection against Scunthorpe in the FA Cup
on Saturday providing his international clearance comes through on time.
There is a strong indication that Jose would like to use the opportunity
to play him immediately. Jiri met Mourinho yesterday, after the medical,
and apparently Jose told him that he would have a run-out in the FA Cup.
Jarosik is quoted as saying that "I am pleased to be at a club like Chelsea.
This is a massive opportunity for me and I want to do my best to be
successful." He is also realistic about his place in the pecking order.
"I don't mind if I start my Chelsea career on the bench among the
substitutes. It is only logical that I won't immediately replace
Claude Makelele or Frank Lampard. And there is one more thing:
I have spent the last three weeks on holiday. I only did the occasion
al run in my hometown. So the first thing I have to do is to start
training again."
Talking of the change of location for him, he said that "I must admit that
I am little bit nervous. I know that I will start from square one in London
and two wonderful years in Moscow will count for nothing. I can't speak
English well, I can't drive a car on the right-hand side of the road,
and I can't play in the [UEFA] Champions League knockout phase. But such a
big opportunity like this may only come once in my career. It is an
incredible challenge for me."
He joined CSKA in 2002 for a Russian national record of €3.7 million. At
CSKA he went on to win the Russian League in 2003, scoring seven goals in
27 games. We hope that his debut for Chelsea is as auspicious as his start
in Moscow: he scored on his debut in the Russian Super Cup against
FC Lokomotiv Moskva and twiceon his league debut against FC Rubin Kazan.
Interesting Jarosik factoid; his wife Veronika runs a famous modeling
agency in the Czech Republic.
As a player, Jarosik is a midfielder player who links play well and also
has a good eye for goal. Tall, yet extremely comfortable on the ball,
he can also playas a striker and is often used as a target man at set-pieces.
At 27, he is considered at a good age, in terms of experience and youth
Jarosik is clearly extremely versatile - a characteristic much liked
by Mourinho - and has extensive Champions League experience. He will have
to wait, however, before displaying the latter, as having played for CSKA
earlier in this year's campaign, Jarosik will be ineligible for the
Champions Leauge for the rest of the season. Nevertheless, Jiri also knows
what it likes to win - and to strive to win - which will also ser
ve him well in a squad that Jose wants to have a hunger for titles.
