Some of you may not know that the 14th of March 1905 was the date that the club was founded in a pub just outside the stadium called The Rising Sun. (The pub is currently named the Green Room.) To find out what happened during the years before the club was founded please read on. The land where the stadium now sits was the headquarters of the London Athletic Club who had owned the land since 1876. The stadium opened as an arena for athletics in April 1877. Henry Augustus Mears (Gus), born in 1873, had different ideas for the land owned by the Athletic Club. Luckily for Gus the owner of the athletic stadium died in 1902. However Gus had to wait for a further 2 years before taking over the lease because of a clause in the original lease agreement. Finally Gus and his brother Theophilus took procession of the club and more importantly the land on the 29th September 1904. Gus was keen to make a fast buck and intended to sell the land to the Great Western Railway who wanted to use the land as a coal dumping yard. Luckily for us one of Gus’s business partners, Fred Parker, told him that football was the future. He suggested that Gus should create his own football team. Football as a professional sport had been around for just 20 years so Gus was unconvinced that the sport would be around in the future so he offered the ground to Fulham FC to rent. Meanwhile Parker introduced Gus to an architect named Archibald Letch who convinced Gus that he should build a superstadium and that’s exactly what he did. (Letch was the guy responsible for the stadiums located at Ibrox, Celtic Park and Hampden) The stadium initially included a 120-yard long stand on the East side which could hold 5000 spectators. Whilst the other sides were all open in a vast bowl which was as symbolic at the time as the Twin Towers of Wembley were until a few years ago. Thousands of tons of material excavated from the building of the underground railway provided high terracing on the West side. Whilst the stadium was being built Gus applied to join the Football League and went about buying himself a team to grace his super stadium. The club was formed on the 14th March 1905 as previously mentioned and was elected into the Second Division of the Football League on May 29th 1905. The first match for Chelsea FC was an away match at Stockport County in September 1905. The newly formed Chelsea team lost that match 1–0. -- " If I quit now, they win.
