We took a team worth more than ￡200 million right to the limit. We were 12 minutes from an historic draw; we were 12 minutes from forcing a replay at Layer Road. That’s just how close it was. Inevitably, there will be a few regrets. That we couldn’t force a second game, that we couldn’t hold on to the lead handed to us by Ricardo Carvalho’s first-half own goal. I didn’t want us to look amateurish. We were there to put on a performance — and show what Coca-Cola League One is all about — and I felt sure there was no way we would freeze on the big stage in front of the live cameras and a 40,000 sell-out crowd. I cannot be more proud of the way my players conducted themselves, on and off the pitch. That was a lovely gesture. The Chelsea shirts were soaked but they have a spare one each and all of our lads got one. Again, that demonstrates the gulf between the clubs. We don’t even have a spare set of away kit because the suppliers have run out of material.
