Although I doubt whether all the bookmakers will follow the example of one of their number last week and pay out on the title. And before everyone starts getting too depressed about the lack of a viable challenger to the champions, it's worth reminding ourselves that it's less than a year ago that we were describing Arsenal as The Invincibles. One defeat then, in late October, their first in 50 domestic games, and Arsenal, to all intents, imploded. Situations can change quickly in football. Right now, Chelsea's confidence is sky-high, but one defeat could change all that and Liverpool will probably go into today's match more widely supported than they have ever been before; the success of the league this season could depend on a Liverpool victory. The Merseysiders have a better chance than anyone of inflicting that first defeat upon the champions. There is no doubt that they have given Chelsea more problems than any other side in Europe this past year. They got the better of them over the two legs in the Champions League last season and were only a decent penalty shout or two away from repeating last season's semi-final, second-leg win in this recent tie. Many of us remember a time when penalties were rather more forthcoming at Anfield but then in those days Liverpool spent most of their time in the opposition's box so they were entitled to win a few. Not all teams enjoyed the kind of success against Liverpool that my old club Leicester did, if you don't mind me saying. Breaking down this Chelsea side, however, would take the cunning of more than one Dalglish. They are extraordinarily well-organised and very physical with it. Michael Essien has made them even better, a player who can defend as well as attack. But they're not a team of Maradonas. It's their strength in depth that is frightening and which Manchester United and Arsenal are unable to match. It would take one hell of a catalogue of injuries to test their resources. Liverpool pinpointed William Gallas as their weakness prior to last week's match, probably on the basis that the Frenchman was really a centre-back and, furthermore, playing on the wrong flank at left back. But if it was a weakness,it was one that was never properly exposed. Chelsea are as secure in defence as any team I've ever seen, so good that their last line of defence - Petr Cech rarely gets the chance to show how good he is. Whether or not Michael Owen would have made the difference in attack, one can only guess. It is an area of the Liverpool team on which much money has been spent in recent years but with no discernible improvement. It doesn't look to me as though Djibril Cisse knows what he's doing. He's obviously very quick but his movement isn't good. Speaking of disappointing exports from French football, Didier Drogba hasn't done that much better for Chelsea and, with the support he has, he's entitled to do a lot better. Doubtless Chelsea will eventually get it right up front even if it means buying every striker in Europe, and after the bit of business Roman Abramovich did last week they could probably do that. A goalless draw last Wednesday, in the circumstances, was to be expected and I'm not sure the league game today promises much more in terms of goals. Chelsea spring from their defensive crouch with great pace along the flanks, but Liverpool have learned how to stifle the threat of Arjen Robben and Damien Duff. Some of Europe's finest got the same treatment last season. That's the strength of Rafael Benitez, their coach. The trouble is they struggle to overcome inferior teams, which is why their league position will never reflect their European achievements while they're still in this transitional stage. We seem to have been saying that for about 15 years now. Matches in the early stages of the Champion League are invariably dull affairs until teams learn with some certainty what they have to do to progress to the next stage. A draw was a good result for both teams. Watching it at my brother's bar in Puerto Banus - Lineker's - the thought occurred that elsewhere in Andalucia it was probably not what a certain team wanted. Real Betis, presumably, would have liked a winner, because they have still to come to Anfield as well as play Chelsea home and away. It's quite possible Chelsea won't drop another point in this group. It's funny how that, for all the millions Jose Mourinho has spent, about 300 of them, he still doesn't have a superstar in his team. He has many excellent and willing players who are prepared to sacrifice all for the good of the team but no real stars like a Ronaldo or a Ronaldinho or an Henry, which probably say a lot about the Chelsea manager. Not that I subscribe to the view that they're boring, but if Chelsea are ever going to assume the mantle of the great British sides of the last decade or so they may have to do that eventually. Someone like Thierry Henry would transform them into a thrilling side, of that I have no doubt, although it might mean them sacrificing their 4-5-1 formation to do so. To some that might sound like a good idea, but on second thoughts perhaps they'd better not. The Premiership is supposed to be a race, not a walk-over. Mourinho confesses to a feeling that the whole world is willing them to lose. And his instinct is correct. The uncommitted will be solidly behind Liverpool. The health of the season depends on them.
