Tribunal sets fees for youth players
Wednesday, Nov 09, 2005
The Football League Appeals Committee has set the three transfer fees
that Chelsea has to pay for the youth team players signed during summer.
Left-back Ryan Bertrand from Gillingham will cost £125,000 initially
plus £50,000 on his first team debut, a further £100,000 after 10, 20, 30
and 40 appearances, £200,000 in the event of an international appearance,
and 15 per cent of any profit.
Central defender Harry Worley from Stockport County will cost
£150,000 initially plus £50,000 on his first team debut, a further
£100,000 after 10, 20, 30 and 40 appearances, £200,000 in the event of
an international appearance, and 15 per cent of any profit.
Forward Scott Sinclair from Bristol Rovers will cost £200,000
initially plus £50,000 on his first team debut, a further £125,000 after
10, 20, 30 and 40 appearances, £200,000 in the event of an international
appearance, and 15 per cent of any profit.
The Football League Appeals Committee was chaired by Judge Robert
Reid and included Andy Williamson (representing the Football League),
Frank Clark (Institute of Football Management and Administration), Joe
Bramhall (PFA) and Jane Purdon (FA Premier League).
Bertrand has made 10 out of 11 appearances for the youth team this
season, missing the last game after being sent home from England Under 17s
without playing having gone down with mumps. Worley has played nine games,
starting eight, and scored one goal. Sinclair has played all 11 games, is
the only ever present, and has scored seven goals. He has also made two
appearances, starting once, for England Under 17s.
All three are 16 years old.

Paul Scally: "All the league clubs are very upset about it. If this sets
an example then the Premiership clubs will come raiding our
youth policies and we'll have no youth players left to play
in our first teams. We'll be struggling in a few years to
have players to develop and sell on."

Kevin Spencer: "Although we got a fair hearing, we were disappointed with
the final package awarded by the tribunal. It will show
Premiership clubs that it is better for them and cheaper
for them to take the likes of Scott and go to tribunal,
rather than negotiate fair and appropriate fees."
Chris Turner: "It's been a fair outcome for us, although ideally we would
prefer Harry to stay. It goes without saying he's going to
find it a lot harder to progress to the Chelsea first team
than he would have at Stockport, but he's got all the
trappings of success around him down there and it can only
give him good experience."
