BACOLOD, Philippines (AP) - Desperate to make a good showing as hosts,
Philippine soccer officials sent scouts and coaches all over the vast
archipelago to seek out talent ahead of the Southeast Asian Games.
But none of them were able to pull off what one young soccer fan did while
sitting in front of his Playstation game console last year - bring in two
English-born brothers contracted to Chelsea, the English Premier League
champions.
The Philippine Football Federation didn't know teenagers James and Philip
Younghusband existed - until then.
"One young kid was playing the FIFA soccer game on his Playstation, and found
the Chelsea reserve list," said Philippine coach Jose Ariston Caslib. "There
were two players eligible to play for the Philippines."
Caslib said the unidentified youngster sent an e-mail to the country's soccer
authorities, urging them to consider the Younghusbands for national selection.
They did.
Now, the Younghusbands - whose mother is Filipino and who live in Middlesex -
have the chance to lead one of Asia's soccer backwaters into the medal round
of the Southeast Asian Games soccer competition for the first time.
An exchange with Chelsea over their availability "was positive," Caslib said,
and an official traveled to England earlier this year to secure their release
for the region's largest sporting event.
Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho approved - the London club's staff felt the
Southeast Asian Games could give the brothers more exposure.
But the call-up came at a cost - they will now not be eligible to play for
England.
"It was a surprise (to be called up)," said James Younghusband, 19, a
midfielder. "We had talked about it, whether it would be England or
Philippines...now, it's definitely the Philippines."
Striker Philip Younghusband, 18, had the chance to trial for England's
under-16s two years ago, but had to withdraw because of injury.
"Football is so big in England, it was my first choice but I've made it, and
I'm happy and proud to be playing for the Philippines," said Philip. "We get
more attention here too, especially from the girls."
The brothers have been part of the Chelsea youth set-up even before they
turned 12. They have trained and played with England's Frank Lampard and John
Terry and France's Claude Makelele - all first-team players at the
premiership winners.
And because of the teenagers' exposure to some of the best in the world, they
are now called upon to provide regular input.
"There is an exchange of ideas," said Caslib. "If it's just my own ideas, we
will not do much."
Unlike other southeast Asian countries, soccer isn't big in the Philippines,
and lags far behind basketball and billiards in popularity and funding.
The Philippines is ranked 187th in the world, sitting behind the Pacific
island of New Caledonia.
Caslib said it was now policy to seek out talent outside the 7,107-island
archipelago to boost their medal chances.
Six first-team players, including the Younghusbands, play professionally in
Britain, Italy, Germany and the United States.
"We really want our first medal," said Caslib. "We're now looking for player
availability outside the country."
The Philippines are tied with favorites Thailand and Malaysia atop Group A
with stragglers Cambodia in fourth in the Southeast Asian Games, an under-23
event. The top two teams advance to the semifinals.
