Terry talks Maka, fans, attitude and England
Thursday, Dec 15, 2005
John Terry, in his role as club captain, takes an interest in Chelsea
from top to bottom. He has been speaking about a few of the current issues
within the club and what it was like to sample, albeit very briefly,
captain's responsibility in an England shirt.
On the field with Chelsea, Terry has been playing the past month
without the major presence of Claude Makelele just in front of him due to
injury.
“We do miss him, of course,” he admits. “He's there every week and
he's a big player. But that's why we have strength in depth. If we have a
problem like this, we know there are players that can move in to plug the
gap.”
Our captain also has a view on the level of support of the team has
been experiencing. “As players, we can always do better. It's the same
with the fans. The game at Anfield [in the Champions League last season]
was a huge one, and made us realise what the fans can do to influence the
ref. Get on his back from the first decision, really make some noise, that
sort of thing. The Chelsea fans are great but, like I said, we can always
do more.”
It is such a desire for constant self-improvement that John believes
is the key to anyone becoming a top player. “Attitude,” he insists is
what makes the difference. “You've got to want to learn, all the time.
Have respect for your coach, understand that you have to work hard and
practice, that sort of thing.”
It is from growing up as a young footballer alongside impeccable
influences like Gianfranco Zola and Marcel Desailly that instilled these
ethics. “They were both massive influences. To have played alongside two
legends in your career, that's pretty special. Who had more of an effect?
It's impossible to say. Franco might have been more fun, more of a
character in the dressing room, but when Marcel spoke everyone listened.”
Terry has similar respect for a past player who never wore the
Chelsea shirt but was also a championship-winning captain with Essex roots
— former Arsenal skipper Tony Adams. Terry cites him along with Paul Ince
and Paul Gascoigne as the players he most admired as a child. “Players
that wore their heart on their sleeve.”
He therefore describes it as amazing to hear Adams call for the
current Chelsea skipper to be given the captaincy of the England team.
Terry wore the England armband for the first time during the final six
minutes against Poland in October with David Beckham suspended and Michael
Owen substituted.
“What a feeling! I got a huge cheer from the fans,” he recalls.
“Amazing! But Becks is our man for the World Cup, he's a great
professional. I'm still just learning the game.”
