"We play when we have to play, we fight when we have to fight."
Sunday, Jan 15, 2006
“The game was not beautiful,” conceded Jose Mourinho after today's hard-
fought 2-1 beating of bottom side Sunderland, “but it was a good game for
us. We play when we have to play, we fight when we have to fight, like we
had to today.”
He was asked how he felt when Sunderland took the lead — against the run
of play despite Chelsea's sluggish opening. “It looks a bit of a
contradiction,” said the Chelsea manager, “but when they conceded , I'm
not happy, but I know it wakes up a team that's sleeping. We start very
bad, had a good reaction in the first half, four or five big chances in
the first 20 minutes of the second half. Then 2-1 up, normally game is
over.”
The fact that it wasn't 'game over' he put down to two things: Mick
McCarthy's tactical switch, bringing on fresh legs and big torsos upfront
in Gray and Murphy to add to the home team's “heart and commitment”;
and the sending-off of the Blues' second goalscorer, Arjen Robben, for
jumping over the hoarding in celebration.
“I don't like a yellow card when a player celebrates with the fans,”
said the Portuguese, “but it is the rule: you have to adapt to it. I
think maybe you should add an extra minute at the end rather than a yellow
card. The first yellow card (for Robben) was not a yellow card - it was
just in front of me. But a referee can make these mistakes. And it means a
chance for Duff and Shaun Wright-Phillips to play the next game [Charlton
at home next Sunday] because he is suspended.
The manager shook his dismissed player's hand as he marched off. “I want
to show the boy I'm with him,” he explained. “He made a big effort and
fought well for us. Character is very important. Our team has some
qualities that money can't buy. Team spirit, organisation, mentality. And
when some people don't give us credit, it's because they don't understand.
I don't think any team in the world can fight like we can. We have
qualities because we have them, not because somebody gave us.”
Mention of Chelsea's massive 16-point lead at the top was sharply slapped
down (“16 to Man United, but Liverpool can go down to 11 if they win the
two matches [in hand] they have to play.”)
But the press wanted to know whether he had any hesitation in selecting
Joe Cole after his well-publicised nocturnal incident (none at all).
The press wanted to know whether there would be any more movement in the
transfer market (no new players, maybe one player departing “because they
want a different situation”)
The press wanted to know what he thought of Hernan Crespo missing Italy.
“If he's homesick and he scores like he does, I want more homesick,” he
joked.
Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy identified similar strengths in his team at
the other end of the table. “I'm sick we've lost” he said, “proud of
the performance. Kelvin Davis has played great. It's a deflection that's
won the game for them. I said to the players afterwards that I'm full of
admiration for them because I don't know a group of players that could
take the number of disappointments they've had and still keep fighting
like they do.”
