The attraction of a Chelsea side drew over 4,000 people to the converted athletics arena that is Brighton's Withdean Stadium and the home club's Under 18 side responded with a determined display that Chelsea's young players could not match. A virtuoso goal by Scott Sinclair levelled the scores after Brighton had taken a shock early lead but Chelsea fatally conceded again before half-time had even arrived. There was a blow to Chelsea before the game when centre-back Michael Mancienne was ruled out because of the hamstring strain he had suffered at the weekend. Captain Jack Cork dropped back from midfield to fill the vacancy but it was a poor start to the game by his team. Nick Hamann in goal needed to save in the very first minute from Joe Gatting and within five minutes, the home side had gone into a one-goal lead. Brighton centre-forward Gatting was on hand to power forward and find the net after a missed clearance by centre-back Harry Worley. Chelsea could have equalised just a minute later but Jack Watkins' shot was too soft after good work from Shaun Cummings. Brighton's Tommy Fraser cleared off the line. Chelsea didn't need to wait much longer for the equaliser. Sinclair, playing on the left of the front three set-off 40 yards from goal, beat the Brighton defence with sheer pace and placed his shot wide of Sullivan. Arjen Robben would have been hurdling hoardings had he scored such a wonderful goal. It was the highlight of Chelsea's night. Just nine minutes were on the clock. Sinclair shot low again on 20 minutes, the ball forced out for a corner by Sullivan, but Chelsea were not dominating possession as they would have wished. The strongly-built Gatting, son of former Brighton player Steve, was continuing to prove a handful. Big questions will be asked of the rearguard after the manner in which Brighton went ahead again on 21 minutes. Worley missed a header to allow the Seagulls to win a corner. Keeper Hamann completely missed the corner kick when it came over and after a almighty goalmouth scramble that saw at least two clearances off the line, Dan Leach forced the ball in. It took until nine minutes from the break for Chelsea to threaten again. Sinclair was again the danger, his prod goalwards tipped round the post by Sullivan. A good double save by Hamann kept Brighton out as half-time approached. James Simmonds curled a free-kick just wide as Chelsea looked to step-up a gear in the second-half but it took until midway through the period before Brendan Rodgers' youngsters opened Brighton up at the back. Substitute Fabio Ferreira received Simmonds clever ball and found Cummings in the centre. The Chelsea striker turned but Sullivan was very quickly out to him and beat the shot away from close range. Chelsea escaped further punishment with 14 minutes remaining when Gatting crashed a header against the crossbar from a corner. Chelsea's Liam Bridcutt was booked for a lunge at Scott Chamberlain that sparked a mass confrontation. The Brighton player also saw yellow. Time was running out as Chelsea broke quickly from the back. The ball was worked forward via Cork, Cummings and substitute Jonas Elmer but Sinclair sidefooted the chance just wide. Brighton's Hinshelwood was then booked for blocking off a Sinclair run and in injury time, Simmonds became the second Chelsea booking as the game ended in a messy fashion.
