Ex-Blue Spencer discusses US All-Stars
Thursday, Apr 20, 2006
Former Chelsea striker John Spencer, now working in US soccer, is in no
doubt that our summer match against the MLS All-Stars will be big news in
the American game.
Chelsea announced today (Thursday) that we will be playing an All-Star
team of the United States' Major League Soccer in Chicago on August 5th
as part of our pre-season preparation.
Spencer, a firm crowd favourite in the Chelsea forward line between
1992-96, later played for four years for MLS team Colorado Rapids. He is
currently assistant-coach at Houston Dynamo.
He knows a lot about the game that side of the Atlantic and believes the
match in Chicago will appeal to fans there, especially given Chelsea's
recent track record as winners.
“For sure they will be excited,” he says. “They call it the EPL here -
the English Premier League — they always like to shorten the names. You
can pick up four or five games every weekend on television, a couple of
live games and a couple of delayed games, and everybody knows who guys
like John Terry, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole are.
“The supporters know the whole background of Chelsea and what Roman
Abramovich has done there, how famous the club is with Jose Mourinho
probably being the number one coach in the world at the moment. Everybody
thinks very highly of the club.
“The All-Stars team happens every year and I had the pleasure of playing
in one myself. In all American sports, they always have an All-Stars game
— whether it be basketball, ice hockey and something similar for
American football called the Pro Bowl. It is an American theme and is
something they like to do — the fans vote for a favourite player.
“The Major League Soccer fans will possibly vote for the team that will
go on to meet Chelsea in Chicago. There are foreign guys who play in the
League and if they do well enough, they will get chosen but it is after
the World Cup so it might be an underlying national team that goes
through. They might reward the guys with a game against Chelsea.”
The match will be one of the first to be played in a brand new
purpose-built stadium for the sport.
“Chicago Fire are actually playing their first eight or nine games of
the season away from home before it is ready but the facilities will be
different class for sure,” says Spencer. “Soccer-specific stadiums are
going for the 25,000 to 35,000 capacity with, if the game keeps getting
bigger, the option to add more on top.
“The game is definitely growing here. At Houston Dynamo, for our opening
game of the season recently, the gate was 27,000 so the crowds are very
good. When people see games back home in Europe they see stadiums that
look empty but they don't realise many are being played in an 80,000
all-seater stadiums.
Spencer's club Houston Dynamo, like Chicago Fire, is one of the MLS clubs
operated by AEG, the leading backer of US soccer with whom Chelsea has
begun an alliance as part of our commitment to the development of the
game there.
The former Scottish international believes he is working in a sport that
is healthy both off the pitch and on.
“There is a lot of good young talent here, good athletes first and
foremost and one thing about Americans is they are very quick learners
and good students of the game.
“We have a similar type of game to Chelsea's coming up in Houston where
Barcelona are going to play so European teams are looking to break this
market down. It is great for the fans in Chicago to see the All Stars
plus, who knows, hopefully some World Cup winners on the other side,”he
adds, still a Chelsea fan at heart.
